2010-03-26 Fri - Critical Mass - The rolling LFGSS birthday party

As a ped I've encountered previous CMs and it only takes 1, at most 2 mins to wait for it to pass. It's on a friday night, it's too minor an inconvenience for anyone to get angry about.

Curious how drivers are content to sit in car traffic for a few mins, but not in bike traffic.

Anyway, that is a point for another thread really.

I prefer to promote cycling by showing it as better than other vehicles.. not riding slowly intentionally blocking up the roads.

CM doesn't ride intentionally slowly--it's a requirement when having so many riders in city traffic. When it gets faster, it always splits.

It's just one ingredient in London's transformation into a cycling city and it has its place. It's often the first for many people to encounter such a friendly atmosphere and realise that they're not alone, and it's been going for sixteen years now, which tells you something about its longevity. As there's so much going on around cycling now, it may appear less important than it used to be, but it started a lot of good things. I don't go that often now, but I still usually enjoy it when I go. The trick is to know when to leave--the start is usually pretty good, and once you've done its typical routes a couple of times, you know when to head off, perhaps go for a meal with a few friends. Ah, I have very fond memories of CMs. Let's hope this one creates a few more for people.

By the way, David, I can't remember if it's been said earlier in the thread, but since the Harp near Trafalgar Square became impossible as a post-CM destination, the Mass has really been flailing around for a post-CM pub. It was the Duke of York for a while, and then the Foundry. If forumengers wanted to meet up for drinks afterwards, it might be good to nominate a pub for afters. Apologies if that has long been devised and I've missed it.

We definitely have to go to the pub after CM. It will be the great opportunity for lots of people to know each other.

Can we agree about one pub before Friday 26th, so if anyone drop out/get lost/we couldn't find ourselves on the end - we will know that riding alone to that pub will not be a miss?

Dover Castle is a nice pub, Sam Smiths tho, which ain't to everyone's taste. Also the people who live in the mews might object to a 100 bike invasion, not sure what they could do about it if they do but just a thought.
