I always opt to hit the spam button. I hope that email providers are doing their bit to track spam and that by people clicking spam it sends it to the spam box for others too. So it feels like a nice "helping others like you" thing, whereas just unsubbing helps no-one but yourself.
So you're the bastard that sets all my opted-in emails to spam. Grrr.. opt out, don't mark as spam.

Am I the only person that has a ad blocker in my head?! I couldn't tell you what any advert I've had recently on the Internet is, if you hate ads so much why do you even let them enter your conciousness?!

Rubbish.
You don't have to accept things. It just creeps along, at some point you've got to push back. We can actually do stuff.
Criteo make money from clients like Wiggle. Wiggle want us as customers and I'm pretty sure we represent a not insignificant chunk of their revenue.
Then there's this place as a site... how much money do Wiggle make as a result of links on the site going to them when we talk about items? Would they like them all re-written and pointed to comparison shopping engines?
We don't have to blithely accept things we're uncomfortable with. Businesses, governments... they will push and continue pushing until we push back. And then they'll ease off for a while and push again. At no point can we roll over and just say, yeah fuck our privacy, fuck us too... we're too lazy and disillusioned to tell you where to go.
Bollocks to accepting this stuff.
Heh... I get angrier the more dismissive others get ;)

since checking all those options, firefox has stopped filling in my web addresses for me.
When I type in 'go' for example it would suggest google to me and i would just tap enter and be taken right there. Now I have to type all my web addresses in full again.
Could this have been caused by all those options i ticked on that web link on the first page? I don't think I have done anything else to my browser recently.
Help appreciated...

I'm not sure... I'm using Google Chrome and the suggest searches are all still working.

Yep, got the same. It's either that Pasela TG tyre or Cialis following me around.

Is Chrome on the Mac faster than Safari?
I used Chrome on my Win laptop, but it used to clog up after the whole day of browsing (some cache issue, I pressume) -

Traffic Marketplace
If you do not see the green check mark, you may not have been opted out successfully. You may try again by clicking here or you may contact the NAI regarding the issue by clicking here. Why can't I opt out of this one? Tried several times and it just won't stay ticked.

Slightly, I think.
I've had exactly the same issue with Dell. I bought a mini 10v netbook from their outlet and ever since I did the research adverts for it have been following me around the internet. It's scary.
It's advertising the new non-refurb 10v, not the outlet one, so I guess the system sees that I was very interested but didn't buy. But it's scary how huge the advertising network is Dell are linked up to. It's also annoying, because I've bought one and it hasn't actually arrived yet.

Well I did that. Not sure the result is better.
For the record, I don't have any.
Anyhow, what I've discovered is that you can opt out of this creepy big brother bullshit by visiting this page:
http://www.networkadvertising.org/managing/opt_out.aspJust select all of the advertising sites and hit the Select All button and then Submit... and done.

It doesn't stop adverts... it opts out of the ones that are based on tracking your behaviour and sharing that data with third parties.

I thought that by now everyone would be using ad blocker and anti spyware as default. I can't remember the last time I saw an ad. Also you can use firefox or chrome in private session or set ff or chrome to delete cache, cookies and any other private items when you close the program.

Were you using the auto-complete from your history and have you perhaps cleared it?
I simply use bookmarks--I always found the history gets so cluttered, anyway, that I never used it at all, so I've switched it off. If you have bookmarks set to the sites you visit the most, auto-complete works a treat.

Just to point out to everyone who has opted out: Many will have seen this, but you also need to click a second link, at the bottom of the second page, to complete the process. It's a bit sneaky and not advertised (arf) at the top of the second page. No harm intended, I'm sure, just not 100% obvious.
Note: The opt out process is not complete until you confirm your selections by clicking below to continue.

I opted out of Wiggle emails some time ago and put as my reason (there is a box) I don't like being followed around by your f...ing ads.

Haha. know that feeling
My favourate bike ad Email is the Friday Planet-x newsletter. You get some genuinly fantastic deals, on stuff you actually want. Discovering it in my spam folder on Monday is a right pisser.

Do you use Google services much?
This is interesting:
http://www.gabrielweinberg.com/blog/2010/03/care-about-search-privacy-use-duck-duck-go.htmlIt's a search engine that basically does not log you in any way, runs their own network, offers a secure connection (no middle-man can see what you're searching), etc.
It's not too pretty, a little childish on the interface, but it certainly offers a non-logged alternative to Google search and I am trying it out at the moment:
https://duckduckgo.com/
I'd rather hurt spammers and help others avoid spam. "Mark as Spam" it always is.
Besides... Google now features the ability to unsubscribe AND mark as spam. Just mark it as spam and if it is from a verifiable mailing list manager it will ask whether you want to unsubscribe to prevent ever getting it again. So one button deals with both scenarios.
