  • I used to have a black diamond frame, bloody awesome!

Ah that's cool to hear! It's not in the best condition, but should get me to work and back ok!

Did you get the forks as well?

  • Did you get the forks as well?

Yup, I did. Front dropouts seem to be narrower than the rear, which I thought was weird, unless this is the norm on older bikes?

  • Hello from Canada. I'm a messenger here in Vancouver and I'm thinking of getting a messenger job in a different city, just to keep life interesting. London is on my shortlist.

  • Hi all,
    I like beer
And bikes, I usually ride/race gears but have decided I need to learn how to ride track so am building my first fixed bike; scored a free frame so now excuses now.
Might see me wobbling round london on new said fixed or cruising on my usual bikes.
    So G'Day all

  • Hi all,
    I like beer
    And bikes, ...l

I think you might fit in. Look in the calendar. Come to drinks. There is lots of beer and many bikes.

  • Hi everyone,

    I'm new.

Tempted to go fixed gear, although I've yet to actually ride one. I have a lovely old Peugeot racer that's been converted to single-speed. Loads of fun to commute with - but going fixed seems a logical progression.

I also have an immaculate old Raleigh that I don't quite know what to do with:
    Raleigh Record Sprint

So I'm here for inspiration and to get some ideas about how to cheaply convert the Peugeot to fixed gear.

Oh, and please excuse my general ignorance to all things fixed and road bike - before last year I had never even sat on a road bike. I'd spent the previous 20-something years on BMX and mountain bikes. But I'm loving road bikes - they just roll and roll and roll!

Are there many good bike shops that do conversions?

  • Oops - sorry about that. Thought I could post HTML.

Here's a link to my Raleigh Record Sprint:

  • Welcome Leifal. THis is definitely a good place to start, to read and probably to finish with. The people on here are amazing and mostly smart. So get involved. Do some drinks. Buy some parts. And dont forget to ride safe!

  • Have you read Sheldon Browns (RIP) website?

He has lots of good information about going fixed.

    Enjoy your stay :)

  • Thanks ChainBreaker and Mc_Nebula.

Yes - I've encountered Mr Brown's website several times. Sad to hear he's no longer with us.

I'm reluctant to try the conversion from single-speed to fixed myself, just because I don't have a great deal of time (I have my own business, a toddler and a partner at university) and I would probably waste money buying the wrong part for the wrong job.

Much more appealing is the idea of taking my bike to a professional and getting it done properly! I know that'll cost more but at least I won't fark it up.

I've seen Brick Lane Bikes - any recommendations?

  • HI...new to the bike scene!...have a trek xo-1 (2001) single speed for around 4months now.plan on getting new bike soon... preferably a single speed (freewheel)....hoping this is the right place to find all the right info.....:)

  • Hello all.. I've been lurking here for a while reading up in anticipation of buying my first single speed - lots of useful info to be found. I'm just hoping this won't turn into another obsessive cash-consuming hobby - my track record is not good.. :)

  • That's a vote of confidence I take it ;-)
