V brake blocks and inserts (in interesting colours) on the Fibrax website on sale from 2.99. Certainly better than the stock shimano ones and worked fine for me.
No need to spend a lot on V brakes, as long as they are not the nasty plastic ones. Deore / Deore LX work great. All are easy to set up compared to cantilevers and very powerful. They need the 'linear pull' type levers to work properly, which are also inexpensive. My favourites:
