A DIY paintjob doesn't really pay off (rattlecans are as much an Armourtex job) and I think stripping would make it rust.
If you are on a budget, have a lot of time and you want to try, then why not.
I have done with paint remover or stripper twice before and, I warn you it is a painful task - literally your skin will be in pain if touched with the stripper.
Normally the paint will not come off in one go so you need several times then you will need to sand it off with sand paper by hand (if you don't have power tool with appropriate tools).
Then, prime with etching primer, sand smooth again then paint with top coat if solid, if you opt for metallic you will need clear lacquer on top.
If you buy all these, stripper, degreaser, primer, colour, lacquer, it is already £30ish plus sand papers and your full one to two days.
If it is your first time paint job, unless you are genius, your un-satisfaction is almost guaranteed and most of the case your frame will start rust soon.
If Armourtex can do all for £49 (solid? collect?) it is well worth it - their finish is fab.
At least I feel this way after I got my frame back from them.
