Not in North London, but Magdalens on Tooley Street is well good with just the right amount of poshness. Very romantic upstairs, and proper exciting food.
Bermondsey Kitchen used to be a favourite of mine, but the last couple of times it somehow wasn't as good anymore. Still worth checking it out.
I also like the Anchor and hope close to Waterloo, but that's a bit weird sometimes as they don't do bookings etc.
Probably on par with the Eagle in Farringdon, even though a bit more expensive.
North I had some really nice steak once at the Old Dairy in Finsbury Park/Crouch Hill in the restauranty bit.
"The Noble" just up the road is also doing some very decent food, but is more like a pub.
Don't know any proper restaurants up there though.
Finally, if you do want posh and romantic then the Oxo Tower restaurant provides the right surroundings. The food is good, the wine as well, the waiters take care of you etc. but the most important part is the view and the fact that your lady really will melt cuz she knows you spent a fair bit on dinner.
