So am I way off the mark suggesting that summink is actually wrong with it? I realise you can't possibly know without looking at it, but are they pretty robust usually?

Canon stock zoom lens are usually crap, but it doesn't stop people from taking photos.

prime lens is your best bet, and concentrate on taking the photos instead and don't worry about the camera.
