Never been to a cigar function as such. Gotten together with guys many times for herfs where we talked bullshit, drank and smoked loads of cigars. Those were fun.

I imagine that event is sponsored by a company or manufacturer and you'll be smoking their brand. That's not necessarily a bad thing and the price is low enough that you wouldn't feel too put out if it was a dull evening.

Jamie, I actually just checked out that link to the cigar social event. They do them with some frequency and the past ones paired rums and Siglo VI or ports and a Maduro Magico. For the price that doesn't seem bad at all, I'd go to one. Hunter and Frankau is a name I recognise as well. I think they are the old importer of habanos and came up with the EMS. If memory serves.

Yeah, Hunter and Frankau build humidors i think... I'm up for putting on some glad rags and going to one of the events. Though one of u lot would have to come with - i dont think i could do it alone, and my gf hates cigars...

I'll go to one, but on the 17th I'm flying back from the States so will have to wait.

It's clear that i have never been to an event like this before, and am therefore probably dreaming... But imagine if they have boxes of cigars, and ur just supposed to help yourself! I'd be wearing trousers with very deep pockets, and would probably have a sack labelled 'swag' swung over my shoulder!

Just thought I'd let you guys know...

I called up the hotel where the a fore mentioned Cigar Event is being held, and Spoke to the concierge. He said that the Events only cater for 16 people. The guests (who are treated on a first come, first serve basis - i.e. if we book tickets in advance we are guaranteed) arrive at 6:30, a cigar/brand expert gives a presentation on the particular Cigar, and why the accompanying drink compliments it. You then smoke said Cigar, and drink said drink - and talk amongst yourselves, and with the expert. After an hour/hour and a half, the event formally finishes but you are allowed to stay in the lounge area of the hotel, carry on drinking (presumably you have to pay for extra drinks) until you wish to leave.

I think there are also canapes served. I'm not sure, but I think you may get more than 1 drink, and you may also get more than 1 Cigar included in the £25...

I'm up for trying it out, and CJ has also said he's up for it. If anyone else wants to come along, let me know and i'll book us some tickets.

Anybody that's wondering about cigar storage (or accessories), this is a vendor I've used a lot. He's a great guy and he lives abut 30 minutes from my folks. I'm going to order a few things to pick up when I'm in the States and if people are interested I can pick up something.

It's a great source for humidification beads which are what I use. They are almost idiot-proof and work a charm. I highly recommend them.

I've been a cigar smoker since the mid-90s and I've never done this. It sounds like a crazy idea but a lot of smokers on this forum that I respect have experience that far passes mine. Will have to try this.

After reading about "Cigar Wetting" on another forum, I have been using this technique for the past two months on almost all the Cuban cigars I smoke.
I am not clear on the exact reasoning but I have been very pleased with the results.

In the original thread the method of wetting was to take the uncut cigar, held at a slight angle with the cap up towards the tap or faucet. With the water running, pass the cigar under the water two or three times, wetting the entire cigar. Then you take your finger and wipe away the excess water being sure the entire cigar is evenly wet.

I do it a bit differently as I have my spray bottle next to my cigar storage. I hold the cigar in my left hand and spray it 3 or 4 times being sure to cover the entire cigar with the spray. Then I wipe down the cigar to spread the moisture evenly and eliminate the excess.

You'll notice that with either method small droplets will appear on the wrapper, this is the reason for wiping with your finger.

Cut the cigar and smoke as normal. At first the wrapper may wrinkle bit, but within the first inch most signs of moisture should disappear.

I wont go into the specifics of the effects of wetting on flavor as it could influence you if you decide to experiment. I would suggest you try this with two machine made or tripa corta cigars side by side. See if you notice any flavor differences.

At first I thought this was a joke and said no way it can make a difference. But after two months I can say that there are not any cigars I would hesitate to "wet" before smoking. I even wet the 30+year old Por Larranaga I smoked just minutes into the New Year.

Sounds crazy! Might have to try it on a cheapo - my dad has a mate who looks like he is deep throating his cigar before he smokes it!

Just a heads up. I received an email on Friday that the Monte 2s I ordered with James shipped and today I got an email that a box of Monte 2s separate from the group buy shipped. Nothing has arrived yet and I've asked for an update on the other boxes. I'll let you all know when I do.

I got a reply from the vendor that makes sense and I saw the shipping schedule. They'll be shipping one a day now. They just don't want to risk creating a high profile by shipping too much at once.

Has anyone ever been to a cigar event? I'm quite interested in going to one, but from the ones I've found on the net, I cant help thinking that they might be really pompous, posh events - with a bunch of wankers in bow-ties chatting about the stock-market...

Anyway, £25 - which apparently includes cigars and drinks, doesn't sound too bad...

Just found this thread, and am glad to see I'm not the only cigar smoking cyclist.

I was cigarette smoker until I went to Cuba a couple of years ago. I've since quite the fags and now just have the odd cigar on a weekend. I've not had many over the winter because of the weather, the smoking laws and the fact that I don't smoke in my house.
