  • @danb what have you done to me.

not knowing the turntable you just offered i decided to take a look. one thing led to another and i ended up at this website. pure turntable porn. gosh!

    http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/sp10page.html

  • Thanks danb. I can't collect from Brizzle, and I will (presumably) not get very good sound without an arm, so for that reason, while I'm grateful for the offer, I'm out.

I have a Heybrook TT2 you can have for £80, if you can collect from Bristol, it needs an arm, as its the TT and armboard only (Linn Cutout)
Its very similar to the Linn LP12, although with an easier to balance/setup suspension.

  • Wow - love that website ^

  • Going back to the subject of tapes, I took the train to work today and listened to Ween's "Chocolate and Cheese" on a cassette on my old walkman (well, not my oldest walkman which is a Walkman 2). My colleagues had a good laugh. So did I.

  • haha the sp10's are nice, but if its turtable porn you are after check out:

  • I'm not really an "audiophile" but I am still listening to vinyl and hoping to treat myself to a new turntable before long. I did spot a Goldring Lenco for sale the other day at what seemed a decent price - I liked the wooden case - but I fear I've let is slip away. There's a B&O somewhere in E London for £175 but that's a bit beyond my budget.

Does anyone here know where to look for a s/h turntable in London that's not going to break the bank? I'm thinking <£100.

Ebayebayebayebay! Do some research and make a collective list of some good classic turntables (will be alot cheaper than anything new on the market) and then just be patient and wait for one of them to pop up on the bay. Always worth the wait. This is quite a good place to check aswell -

  • is that bi wiring

also regarding the output of an amp / pre amp

i have quad speakers rated at 100W and 8OHM is my quad 303 33 amp powerful enough to drive the speakers correctly

i must admit i am very happy with the sound and quality with my set up currently but would be gutted if i am not getting 100% out of my equipment

can anyone explain what differences i would experience with a low powered amp and these speakers vs a high powered amp with these speakers ?

Not sure what amp that is that you have but heres a general rule for biwiring:

No, if you're running it through an integrated amp.
Yes, if you're running it through a pre/power amp.

Heres a good visual explanation of how biwiring is done:

    http://www.davidmannaudio.com/FAQ/faq3.html

To be honest there hasn't been any proof that biwiring improves sound at all. Some people swear buy it and say they can hear a difference..but do they really..or do they just want there to be a difference. I think it should be the least of your worries.

@ danb, what do you mean marketing bollocks about the watts rating?! It is of course true that its more important having good compenants in an amp rather than a high watts output, but some speakers THRIVE on a powerful amp. It is possible to drive a pair of 100W speakers with a 50watt amp and it will still sound good especially if its a good amp in the first place, but you will not be getting the most out of it, if thats what you want. And remember you can ruin your speakers if the watts from the amp isnt the minimum power the speakers require!

    Bane of the Audiophile...

  • I just got me Quads, 33 & 303, yesterday. Now to work out what the buttons & knobs mean..

...Spend the money you were going to spend on cables on Vinyl/CD's and a decent bottle of wine instead :)

Ok some advice please ... Cables ... can someone give me the low-down... what's worth it, what's not?

I need two 5pin Dins to RCA socket (for phono and tuner) and two 5pin to RCA plugs for CD player/rec, in and out. I have a pretty basic looking 4pin connector for the pre- to power-amp (worth shelling out for a new posh one?) and I need some speaker cables ... I think with banana clips for the 303 end, looks like bare screwed down at the speaker end.

I was assuming this lot would cost me a bout £25 for basic DIN stuff, a bit more for speaker wires. Which bits are worth spending better cash on? Anyone want to give me an idiots' guide? For instance, I'm wondering whether the Phono>DIN one ought to be the better kind since phono singals are such low voltages ... that sort of thing ...

  • right so bi wiring does definately need a doubling up of the number of cables

so would the speaker be wired internally to split up the hf and lf because the same signal is going down both pairs of speaker cables ?

bi wiring is just to de clutter the input to the hf and the lf, i.e sending just what is needed into each driver / woofer

  • if there's connectors between the lf and hf sockets (like the ones in that photo you posted), take them out to bi-wire.

  • they are a complex bundle of components skully

the buttons over to the right are just fancy graphics equalizers

you can send signal straight though from amp to speaker by pressing the cancel button or you can bring the bass and treble into play with the 5k 7k 10k buttons although i don't honestly know what difference there is between the other three ? and the slope dial no freaking idea about that

i may have a few of the older style din 7 pin connectors here that came with my amp let me just check

  • 7 pin?! huh!?

Yeah, thought so. It was really the 'slope' one that seemed a bit technical.

Yeah I normally bypass that sort of 'Bass n Treble' stuff on my current modern NAD, except when listening at very low levels to add a bit of bassyness.

Do you spend cash on fancy speaker cables dicki?

  • Do you spend cash on fancy speaker cables dicki?

i'd like to know people's answers to this.
i've never bought speaker cable before - i have always pinched them from my dad.

  • No-one's listening Richie....

  • fuck em skulls.
let's go to the hi fi forum and talk about bikes...

  • hahah, yeah I was wondering if this is really the best place...

  • i got speaker cables with the amp pre amp when i bought it qed speaker cable

i have avoided using bell wire for speakers in the past well apart from my first midi system

cable talk 3.1 for my main stero in the lounge

no name cables in the bedroom just thickish black copper cables

a friends brother in law used to work for hi fi weekly so managed to get some nice interconnect cables for the various steros as they were just sent in by the manufacturer for testing and reviews given out to staff once reviewed

i wouldn't go cheap but then again i wouldn't spen £100 on an interconnect with gold plating and solid gold wire

it's aa lot like bikes really
a good £400 bikes is as good to ride as a £2k high end bike but it's really difficult to tell the difference

  • i had some speaker cables with reynolds 531 cores / inners once ... they sounded awesome

  • 531! hah

  • i had some speaker cables with reynolds 531 cores / inners once ... they sounded awesome

Carbon is the way to go........ ;p

  • If you want to bi wire and don’t want two sets of cable, you can use microphone cable – star quad (4 conductors together in one plastic jacket). Most popular and the best for speakers – Canare 4S11 star quad. But as others said there is no much benefit of bi-wiring, unless you got super hi end system and trying to squeeze another 0.001% of performance hehe.
I personally got myself 5 meters of nice oxygen free cable, banana plugs and heat shrink from this guys:

    http://www.hificollective.co.uk/catalog/loudspeaker-cable-p-2493.html
    http://www.hificollective.co.uk/catalog/gold-plated-large-banana-plug-solder-bucket-screw-p-2484.html

Cable only about £2 per meter and is as god as something you can buy ready made by big labels for £100 or more.

If not DIY, I can recommend bluejeanscable.co.uk (American company but ship worldwide)

  • Can anyone let me have / buy their old speaker stands? I need something really low, just enough to get my Tannoy LGMs off the floor. They're about 80cm high so I guess I don't want much over 25 to 40cm stands. I need them to have spikes so i can adjust the height, my floor is uneven ...

    Please....
