  • Headed up to London next weekend and was hoping for some advice, other than to trawl charity shops, on where to get some tweed at a decent price for The Tweed Run II (The Chappening).

I guess I'm not going to be the only person in need to some style assistance so thought it may be worth a thread, particularly if people are looking to shift some of their own fine threads onto other folk.

Any reccomendations or anything for sale?

  • JD has some plus fours on the market
Also the Charity shop at the end of Lambs Conduit street is a goldmine and cheap too! Got my whole outfit there for the Christmas Run for £8!

  • JD's shop in Camden market, charity shops in Kensington/Chelsea/Notting Hill etc (i.e. the places where tweed is more likely to be owned), Beyond Retro in Cheshire Street off Brick Lane, Old Hat in Fulham High Street (good for new plus fours and I got a wonderful Huntsman tweed coat in there)

  • There's a few on Lower Marsh in Waterloo too, but there's more for the ladies than the gentlemen. Plus, you're likely to bump into Gerald CoppiThat ask he's always lurking around there in some sort of dapper attire.

  • There is a store called 'BANG BANG' located in Soho, Berwick St that is a secondhand / vintage shop. . often has some great tweedy suiting pieces . . not always the cheapest but authentic quality clobber none the less

  • coppithat has got some tweed too

  • JD's shop in Camden market(...)

I've been to JD's shop on Friday. Looks like all the breeks on display are size 38 up.

  • What I need, is this :-) and I can't find it anywhere:

  • Thanks folks. I shall be in London on Saturday to do a bit of shopping. Does Mr. That have a shop front or a place of business?

have seen loads of these at beyond retro on cheshire...

  • to be honest, you are probably more likely to get bargins trawling charity shops in your home town! i've never found london to be as good as my old haunts when it comes to charity bargins. there just seems to be too many people who know what they are looking for! got my suit for the run last year for £4 from a little shop in blandford (deepest dorset...) tho i suppose living in close proximity to the country and plenty of small towns probably helped!

  • I concur with miss_socks. I stumbled upon a vintage/secondhand shop in Leicester and it certainly seemed to be better priced than any London shop with tweed etc. I think you're best off looking in any charity shop you go past.

  • Alas I've been trawling for tweed in charity shops in Swindon for the better part of a year. So far there has only been one waistcoat that was several sizes to small. Most of the shop staff say that they don't really get any tweed around here. There aren't any vintage shops here. I've even tried Marlborough a couple of times to no avail.

  • Get yourself over to Gloucester, loads of tweed shops...

  • Gloucester is a hole. Cheltenham may be better.

    Not this

    Gloucester is a hole.

    ^ This.

I'm not coming to London just for a tweed shopping mission, I'm also coming up to look at the Irving Penn, Twiggy and Jane Brown exibits at the NPG and the Deutsche Borse Prize at the Photographers Gallery. I also have the added bonus of possibly attending Central Beers and not having to haul my fat carcass over the Cheltenham Escarpment when there's a threat of snow at the weekend.

  • Cirencester is probably a better bet - possibly a bit small, but its closer and quite the Landed Gentry kind of place and also has an agricultural college - bound to be masses of tweed :)

  • i just bought a reversible tweed waistcoat for 50p
    im so happy
just the trousers to go now

You might think that, but there has been a surprising dearth of tweed in Cirencester's charity shops as well. There's some actually tweed shops, but I was hoping to be cheap and avoid paying full whack. Besides, Cirencester is also a dreary hole and I fancy a trip to London.

Cirencester makes Gloucester look like New York City and actual landed gentry would wear use their tweed.

Cheltenham for those with too much money who want to look like landed gentry once a year and then donate it all to charity.

  • Brighton is ok but the real deal is in eastbourne, lots of old people there and lots of sport students who couldn't care less about tweed.

You obviously didn't look hard enough as there were a few smaller sizes. Yes at the moment i have a lot of 36",38",40" as the trendy crowd keep buying them.

Heads up for anyone wanting tweed i will be having a delivery arriving on Friday 19th. It wont be in the shop on that day but phone on saturday for info on what's arrived.

Also have deadstock breeks arriving next week in sizes 32" mainly.

  • JD, where is your shop?
