Drag Sprints...

  • Neate St, Burgess park nr Peckham is a dead end road that could be worth a look to see if it's long enough.

  • Am happy to scout anywhere around Hackneyville but would be grateful if others could check out suggested areas...happy to go back to location last time but would be nice to have a revolving location

Things to bear in mind re suitability of location:

    Smoothness of road surface
Width of path/road - needs to be wide enough for two cyclists two cycle side by side relatively safely at night
Length - would like min 200m and space for a run off
    Neighbours not too close
Distance from central - would be keen to avoid too long a ride from central

    Some nice to haves:
Scenic location - both venues so far have had their visual interest (new stadium and hand would
    Nearby off license
Out of sight - would be good not to have to worry about local hoodlums turning up although if there's enough of us it shouldn't be an issue
    Covered area
Nearby pub for initial meet up and also after drinks

  • am certainly up for this!! lopro's in prime shape.

  • I'll get my scouting head on and see what I can find.

  • I'll destroy you all.

  • Not sure if this has been mentioned... But a sweet location for this is the North Side of Hyde park, where the road is closed in the evening (or the south side for that matter).

Flat, wide and good road surfaces.

  • Thought you guys might appreciate this as inspiration...

Just came across this video on Youtube. Excuse the lack of English on it.

Basically it's some guy on a 99yr old 29lb singlespeed butchers bike and he's doing a straight 200m drag against Jens Voight who's riding his standard sub-8lb road bike. Have a watch!

YouTube- Wetten dass Jens Voigt Tour de France Freiburg

  • It's actually a 27kg (~60lbs.) Swiss military bike from 1910. Voigt calls it right at the start by simply predicting that it's going to be very close, as his opponent is basically a sprinter and he is an endurance rider himself. He gets it right on all counts.

Sad to hear that apparently since 2001, the Swiss army hasn't used bicycles any more.

  • Hmm. The problem is they now stick soldiers, etc, in packs in big ol' trucks and lug 'em round that way. They'd be much fitter if they had to cycle everywhere (i.e. free fitness training!) and the world would be a better place.

Just imagine how many stealth missions could be done by bike...

  • how about euston road during rush hour? first from baker street to kings cross?

although thats more of a road rash scenario than a sprint...

  • well. Euston rd doesn't actually extend to Baker st so the course would at least be short.

  • If its at night the Greenwich foot- tunnel can be a lot of fun

  • Wow. That's crazy.

    Avoid the tramps/bulkheads.

    Bit like Running Man.

  • its fairly short but it ends with an incline

  • Yeah as far as I remember from tearing through it on night rides, it's basically a sort of shallow v, sloping down right to the middle and uphill for the second half? Too narrow, and illegal to cycle in it, last time I used it there were lift attendants at both ends, fairly late in the evening.

  • On the Thames Path night ride some time ago we went along a really nice stretch, by the river, near a DLR station I seem to recall. Anyone remember where that was? We had been on some really narrow and muddy shitty windy bits, then a really nice fast smooth well-paved wide bit with noone around. C'mon somebody must remember that spot too.

  • What about next to the O2/North Greenwich tube entrance? There's a road that is often blocked off by cones so that the car parking people can control flow. Might be worth looking into. The road I'm thinking of is Millennium Way.

Your soldiers might be but the running in the Australian army is crazy. Digger fitness levels are extremely high. Cycling can be done in leisure time. My brother bought a bike but rarely used it often being too knackered from 'work'.

  • There's no need for Australian soldiers to cycle.

A bike is no good storming Turkish cliffs or surrendering in Singapore.

  • Can we skip back on to topic please?!

  • Looking at running some drag sprints again mid late April

Friday evenings often seem like a good idea

22 April is looking like best date - let me know asap if this clashes with other activities

  • What about a bit later in the year? When there is a better chance of good weather...

    Last year was freeeezing

  • I might be washing my hair on the 22nd.
