I personally would rather it be left open and those posting the rot in there get pulled up time and again and done over (in the LFGSS fashion of piling in).
What broke the camels back was something that BDW pointed out, that if you compare the first few posts and thread intention to the last few pages, the difference is stark and very extreme. It represents not a single bad post, a mild diversion if you will... but instead a full-on dive into the gutter.
I do maintain a basic decency standard on the forum and allow that to be dictated by the reported posts received and the general consensus of the mass. But because I'm not really a believer in "the wisdom of the crowd" and because I do believe in Voltaire's "may not agree with you but defend your right to say it" I'm left feeling slightly contradicted... should I stand by and defend the erosion of the community standard because of a personal belief, or should I allow the forum standard to overule a personal belief... and in fact I've chosen the latter today, and maybe tomorrow I would've chosen the former like I have done in the past.
I generally reserve the right to be contradictory when weighing things up.
It went too far, it really did go a bit Daily Star there for a while... and I really hope that's not representative of the people here, but even if it is I'd like to maintain at least the illusion that it's not. So, thread closed.
