• Doing it from the web, I live in Manchester during term-time so baker street is a bit of a mission from here, haha

  • Good luck with it, I'm anticipating a bit of a mess first time round.

    Seen this http://www.bicycledoctor.co.uk/ ?

  • yeah they're quite good
    cheers, good luck

  • These machines are so rad i love the real analogue nature of it. i remember the days of cutting spoke after spoke after spoke.
    Ahh Phil...

  • Hi, I've got half a box of ACI Alpina S/S DB Spokes (72 in total) for sale if you're interested. In London near Highgate - otherwise can meet in the centre.

  • What length? I may be interested.

  • I need 286.2, but i am in Manchester
I ahve heard that exact size isnt neccesary, can be a little bit out, so i guess is it better for me to go for 287mm spokes? or 286?

  • 286

  • Hi there, I'm building a wheel and I calculated the lengths at left length 292.8 right length 291.3
Johnnyringo has some 290mm ACI Alpina S/S DB Spokes. Would they do the trick?

It's almost 3mm difference on the right, is this a problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rounding down (OK some round up) < 2mm is the number usually banded about as an exceptable margin. You stand a very good chance of having to few threads engaged in the nipples. The right length would be fine though.

  • I thought system x were the same as formula, zenith etc. But the spoke calculator (here: http://lenni.info/edd/) gives different sizes for them. I'm working out a rear system x 32 hole, to open pro x3, length. Gives 292.1mm but concerned about the dissparity.

Any one used the system x measurement on this calculator?

  • Is the hub flip/flop? i.e threads on both sides?

In which case the difference is only 0.3mm.

  • it is, is the standard formula not flip flop?

  • I don't know mate... never looked too closely.

To be fair to Mr Fried Chicken (creator of edd), yours is a fairly common combination of components, and he would correct any mistakes immediately. I say just go for it.

  • Aye, it's a pretty straight forward setup, it was the only bit of my polo bike borrowed from the everyday ride, how irritating.. ping.

  • The "Formula flip-flop" measurement came from Arup: http://www.yogarup.com/wheels/hubs.php

In any case, Prav is right: The small difference in centre-to-flange leads only to an insignificant 0.3 mm difference in resulting spoke length.

If you do end up buying the formulas maybe measure them again and let me know.

  • same. i'd use 292mm for that set-up for either

  • Cheers guys, I popped in to the bike shop today.. got the spoke (I needed it after some wear and tear from polo), the bike shop guys were intrigued by the calculator too.

  • bump and new build
has anyone done laced sjsc hubs to mavic a319 hubs 36H 3 cross ?

wondered if anyione knew a spoke length
will try building up with spare spokes in the shed and give it a go with what i've got maybe it'll work but once built i should be able to determine more closely what length i'll need

  • sjs track hubs are the same as system ex/formula hubs. I used 288mm for a system ex to an a119 which has pretty much the same erd so probably that'll do you.

    also: http://lenni.info/edd/

  • hey taki ,

    thanks for this
i went to the lenni site in the end and got 288mm
do you know if the nipples completely used all of the thread on the end of the spoke ? some people say buying a spoke an extra 1mm longer so there is a complete overlap of spoke and nipple making it stronger

  • i have no idea. if you want to buy spokes 1mm longer, go for it. but you may end up having to tension past the amount of thread on the spoke which is exactly the same if not worse than having a mm or two not quite screwed into the nipple.

  • Anybody knows off by heart what bladed spokes length do I need to lace low flange Campagnolo hub to the 700c Shamal?

Gizmond sent me a link to Campy Oldy who stock said bladed spokes, but I'm not sure what length I need (and I have the high flange hub fitted at the moment).

  • 12H or 16H

  • 16 spokes
