Thank you Karlsruhe! What a brilliantly organised tournament. It really was never planned for 40 teams, but you nailed it.
The venue was amazing – I can’t believe the messehalle people were so tolerant and accommodating. It was great to play indoors, stay warm the whole time, and have clean toilets. The nice bit about only playing on only one court was the level of support for almost every game.
The goals were also good. They did get knocked over a few times, but I doubt it was more times than cones would have been knocked out of place. Apart from the fast ricochet, the ball popping up into the net round the back was a bit of a problem. But they were really easy to play and the 180 diameter seems perfect.
Once again, London showed brilliant support for their own throughout, and every team represented really well on court. Mark’s BB goal was absolutely beautiful, Hassan’s back-hand from the top left corner at the tightest angle was stunning, and Yorgo’s goal was genius; from a save at one end, knocking the ball up court then getting to it to score before anyone else, amazing! So many other great plays I forget.
At the end of the qualifiers, the top 17 teams included 6 London teams, with 2 french, 2 swiss and 7 from Germany (and they had 18 teams taking part!).
Thanks to all from London and especially Cosmic for supporting us, even in our final group game where our loss would have meant your place in the last 8. We should have done much, much better in the quarter finals against DTGP – eurgh, schooled!
Thanks Jono and Matt, it was really fun to play the way we did.
The biggest thanks to our host Steffen and his lovely other half, Susen, for putting up (with) Malice and L’equipe, sharing your whisky and your amazing home, driving us around, feeding us and making us feel really welcome in Karlsruhe.
