Frame design fail, methinks. The inside face of the spider is only about 3mm outside the BB face, so with short stays and a large PCD spider, there is always scope for a problem, which the frame designer should have foreseen by dimpling or curving the stay.
What did you have on there before the restoration?
I had some rubbish yet very compact 110bcd chainset very briefly, no problem there. I don't understand, you would think that Argos would be able to design a frame that functions properly, surly 144 is pretty standard. Any suggestions on correcting the problem, without changing the chainset?

you would think that Argos would be able to design a frame that functions properly, surly 144 is pretty standard.
You would hope so, wouldn't you? Tighten it up and measure the chain line, that will tell you whether you've been unlucky and got a small spindle and/or a crank with a large hole. If it's 42 to 43mm, your crank and BB is within spec as a combination and it's definitely the frame builder's fault. That will also tell you how far you need to move it out to get the spider to miss the chainstay - given that these things flex a surprising amount in use, you need a good 1mm clearance unloaded. Obviously, that's likely to require an expensive (Phil or Royce) BB with a longer spindle, because it looks like putting more than a couple of mm of shims under the fixed cup of your current BB is going to lead to clearance issues on the non-drive side. Then you need to sort out the chainline at the hub - if you need more than 1mm of spacer under the sprocket, your lockring won't have enough thread to bite on, and much more than that and your sprocket will be hanging on for grim death too. If you're not wedded to the idea of a lock ring, there are some trials sprockets with longer threaded bosses than normal track sprockets, otherwise you'll be looking for a wider hub.
Bet you wish you had one of these

Thanks for the breakdown mdcc, it looks as if i have a battle ahead of me. Ill measure it up once i find my metalrule. Im thinking sourcing a more compact chainset may end up being a more practical route, any suggestions?
Those bloody incompetent Bristolian's can't do anything right.
Bet you wish you had one of these

Might be worth trying a SRAM S300-1.1, as the ring is mounted inside the spider.

Assemble it dry at first to check that it works, and you can always take it off and send it back if it doesn't, CRC have a hassle free returns policy.

Thanks mdcc, very helpful you really are a bank of knowledge. I'll have to weigh up the options. I might just have to try out the Sram, its no record but if it works it works. also Just to let you know i am a Bristolian myself.

Heavier and slower than my last bike but oh so enjoyable to ride! And just in time for an apparent improvement in the weather.
