  • With a new chain I leave off cleaning it for as long as possible as I think the factory lube is probably better than anything I can put on it and better applied.

When it comes to cleaning I use Jizer with a brush, then rinse it off with water, leave it to dry and then use a spray oil called メンテルーブ (Mente-lube) by WAKO'S, a maker off all things oily here in Japan. I spray it on while running the chain and then wipe off the excess with a rag.

Every time I remove a chain for any reason I clean it by putting it in a soft-drink bottle full of Jizer and shaking it vigorously - you'd be amazed at the crap left in the bottle afterwards. I then put it in another bottle of メンテルーブ and shake it about to get the lube into the rollers, wipe it off and replace it on the bike.

Every time I clean a chain I notice how much smoother it runs. More so on my geared machines.
