Unless there is clear signage that bikes must not be chained to the gate or it is clearly in frequent use (at least once or twice a week) then I reckon you could sting them for a new lock.
I wouldn't normally be so sympathetic but rail companies and station staff have a shitty track record on bikes.
Go easy on them. Rail employees often have a very short train of thought.

They often can't (narrow) gauge the wider implications.
-
• #104
It's easy for them to lose track.

haha!

okay. got a call from the station manager. the british rail fuckers from the station took it because it was locked up on a gate. it'll cost me a £10 fine to get it back, and £120 for a new lock. but at least it's back. which is unbelieveably great news.
stand down everyone. and thanks for your help.
great news!

Whilst you're at it, ask them how they got through it and how long it took.

One might imagine a member of staff having trouble with a (£120) lock and going at the bike instead...

when oliver wakes up this thread is going to be derailed i reckon. whoever took it needs to go for retraining.

I think you have a strong platform to build a case for lock reimbursement. At least you managed to track it down though(t).

£1 please :-)

Shush guys... I imagine Teddy has rather low self steam after all this.

good news ted. i remember security at marylebone putting a massive extra lock around mine so i couldn't remove it - they have changed tactics obviously. glad all is well, apart from the lock of course.

Glad to hear the news Teddy. You better watch yourself riding that bike though, you'll get chased by loads of forumengers who haven't re-read the thread.

But yeah, great news! I was shocked when I first read the thread. I remember that bike being for sale and being tempted...
-
• #122
Wow I'm smiling that you got it back. I'm really glad for you :)
-
• #123
Glad you got it back :)
Can they cut locks? Surely that's criminal damage?

Train Station = Private property non?
They will almost certainly have a sign saying that you leave your bike locked there at your own risk.

Private property with free public access. Bit of an odd legal area but as long as there are signs they are in the clear. If there aren't then you might be able to put them on the buffers.
Glad that had a relatively happy ending
