  • You could say the same about people spending ridiculously large amounts of money on a bike (in my opinion anyway). But if your point is about people spending large amounts of money on a car as opposed to the car itself, why is there never a mention of those people in the middle east with their fleets of gold Rolls Royces?

Personally, I would never drive in London, let alone drive a supercar in it. But I don't feel like I have a duty to criticise those who do. Like I said, some people buy £500k Ferraris as a status symbol, some people buy £5k BMWs as a status symbol. Some people buy £500k Ferraris for performance and fun, some people buy £5k BMWs for fun. If people have the money, why shouldn't they be allowed to spend it how they please? They're not harming anyone are they?

You write as if it was your duty was to defend people who drive expensive cars though.

People choose to spend their money on what they want but let's not say it is not harming anyone. Everything we do has an impact. If I choose to have something that I really do not need then I am responsible for wasting resources and for depriving people. It is like sharing food with 10 people. If I put half of the dish on my plate then there is less for the others. We are all responsible of our actions.

To buy something for just a status symbol is wasteful. A 500k Ferrari to a £5 sparkly jumper at Asda just to show off make people terribly unhappy and grasping. We have been fooled into thinking that having the best things will contribute to our happiness but look at the grief when those things are taken away from us or when we can't get them.
