  • just measure it - job done. or try and fit a known thread (gently) and if it fits then you know.

  • beg to differ.

some ISO/British/english (ISO basically used british standard for their standards, based on the threads used by a bike manufacturer in brum) examples,

    1.375" x 24tpi bb thread
    1.375" x 24tpi freewheel/cog thread
    1" x 24 tpi headset thread
    1.29" x 24tpi lockring thread

    Bollocks.
    You are totaly correct.

    Too much rushing.

    ashamed

  • I'm not trying to figure out which one I have, just what it's called. I know that mine is 26 tpi, which is why I'm considering not keeping the frame for too long.

  • its called raleigh. read up.

  • Sorry Josh, I also feel ashamed. Especially seeing as I have already read that info to find out in the first place!

Following on from the 'Raleigh' thread issue. Does anyone know where I can buy a narrower axle to go into an old 'cup and cone' bb? I can't seem to find them anywhere. My Raleigh came with something like a 120/125mm wide axle and I need one more like 105/115mm wide.

  • re thread the bb, if you can, i would

  • Get a Phil; you can always get different cups and re-use the BB if you eventually get rid of the frame, so you've only lost $47 if you change.

Just been looking at the phils on aspirevelotech, and the bb's seem to be either campagnolo or jis, by campagnolo are they refering to iso ?

  • seem like ages since i started this.need to change the handle bars cus theyre manky and i have a deep v front wheel with no tyre to be added too.

  • Phil actually refers to ISO taper as Campy. Go super gay abbreviations. Go.

  • Yes

    ok thanks.

  • few companies use ISO it seems, except for campagnolo and miche. and the sidewinder of sugino 75's and mighty's.

  • I have a Shimano ISO....

    ;-)

  • really? what?

  • BB-7600 NJS

All (?) NJS BB-axles are ISO, incl Shimano's.

  • ah, touche.

  • This discussion got nerdy!

  • few companies other than Shimano, Campag, Miche and Sugino use ISO it seems, which leaves.... uhm

    .

  • You forgot phil / royce off your lists too.

  • .

i am just commenting that JIS is more common than ISO tapers, especially at the lower end of the market.

    Don't think that's right mate.

I just bought some DA 7600's, and I've been having trouble choosing whether to go for an ISO or JIS tapered BB.

Everyone seems to have a different opinion, and I know people who runs the 7600's with both style taper BBs.

I have come to the conclusion that 7600's are in fact JIS for 2 reasons:

    1) Sheldon Brown clearly says that Sugino and Shimano are both JIS, but Sugino njs cranks are ISO (He doesn't say that Shimano's njs cranks are ISO).

    2) When I emailed Shimano's FAQ team, they responded by saying; all Shimano cranks are JIS.

There is also an opinion that shimano 7600's are somewhere between ISO and JIS, which means they can be used with both. But the lesser of 2 evils will still be JIS (according to Sheldon Brown), because by using ISO, everytime you take the cranks off the BB and then re-install, you push the cranks further down the spindle, which eventually causes the crank's taper to 'round'.

  • I think you've misunderstood forms. All NJS BBs are ISO tapered. If Shimano make one, and I presume they did at some point, then it'll have been ISO tapered.

  • Having re-read the post, I did mis-understand. But I think the point still stands; why would Shimano make 7600 cranks JIS, and 7600 BBs ISO?

  • They would have had to make 7600 cranks with ISO tapering if they wanted NJS certification, no?
