  • I used to work at betd when I was a youngster and had a wheelset built for my bike recently. I thought they were taking a while to arrive but when I finally got them, it was well worth the wait. Something of interest- when I visited them in may (betd and goldtec are the same company, as in, they're both made in the same factory) bob showed me a revised prototype of the goldtec track hub which was under development for condor, so I guess condor liked the goldtec's, thought they could do improve, and got betd to manufacture them there.

  • 31trum(murtle) had the same problem on goldtec, after putting on for 1/2 turn undoing then tightening a bit more, repeating the process until fully on. now it ain't going nowhere, good hub by the way.

same for me, i spent about half an hour slowly putting the cog on and off going 1/4 turn further on each time and stopping to check it was parallel and not cross threading.
nice hubs but i would like to see Hope make road/fixed hubs as their finishing is slightly better than goldtec.

  • yeah, they will if the craze lasts. Hope stuff is chris bling for sensible wonga.

    Goldec:

the hubs must last a long time, I thought my rear hub was 3rd hand, but found out that it belonged to Winston first, then another dude before my mate had it, he then sold the bike it was on to another mate who gave me the hub. I put in new bearings and built it up. 5th hand, probably 5-6 years old and I expect it to last at least another 5.

  • Good to here that they last. Mine is sitting on my shelf at the moment waiting to be built into a wheel when I have enough money.

Don't buy from Brixton Cycles though. I mail ordered mine and it arrived with a scratch on the flange and the end caps are scratched/dented slightly too. Wankers. They were pretty rude on the phone too :-/

  • eeehhhh

And that's obviously Brixton Cycles fault....

They're probably the most supportive bike shop in London to the cycling community and a lot of people rate them highly. Maybe either they or you were having a bad day when you spoke to them.

  • My point is that even if people do rate them highly it is completely inexcusable to sell what is effectively a damaged product at full price without notifying me before I hand over my card details. There is no way it could have been the Royal Mail's fault either; it arrived in a very thick jiffy bag.

I have bad days at work sometimes; it doesn't cause me to be rude on the phone.

  • Doubt anyone gives a fuck but...
I am currently in search of Goldtec hubs in the silver finish.
Told there is a 2/3 week wait on these at the moment.
Cavendish cycles have a pair but wanted £100 (ONE HUNDRED POUNDS) just for the rear!!!!
Needless to say I left empty handed. Maybe I look funny!?!?
I was going to order a pair from Outspoken but they suggest that the silver versions are UN-ANODIZED and therefor prone to corrosion! I don't really understand this, I thought all silver or polished parts were generally not prone to corrosion?!?! I dunno :$

  • They may be prone to a little oxidisation, but not much... They're made from aluminium BTW...

  • anodizing can only be done to aluminium, and aluminium doesn't corrode. Unless you're riding through hydrochloric acid.

er, silver is just a colour? Unless goldtec have started making their track hubs out of ACTUAL silver, which i doubt somehow. If you polish untreated steel, it will rust with exposure to water. If you polish aluminium, it will dull because it develops a satin layer of aluminium oxide on exposure to oxygen. Chrome tends to stay shiny, as does stainless steel.

I take it you haven't studied chemistry or metallurgy beyond GCSE level.

  • Yes, aluminium is what i meant, not silver. Was just referring to the appearance.
Of course this does not rust in the same way steel does.
Maybe I should not allow myself to doubt my own mind in the first place!

  • Thanks.
