a question to cat experts. Would it be cruel of me to get a cat when i currently live in a 5 room one bedroom flat on the 1st floor? getting to the garden is not possible
Depends on the cat. An older rescue cat would probably be ideal, if it has been used to spending more time indoors than out. An older cat may be ok on it's own if you are out during the day.
Just over a year ago, I got two kittens, each of a breed that were happy to stay indoors, and we happily lived in a 2 bed flat for a year. Saying that, they now have a couple of flights of stairs to run up and down, and while they still live exclusively indoors, they needed a bit more exercise than they were getting in the smaller flat. I specifically got two so that they would keep each other company while they were alone during the day.
You'll need to be very diligent with the litter tray, and get a bunch of scratching posts and a cat climber/tower to keep it occupied.
