recently needed to ship my dads bulky MTB from Malaga in Spain to Recife in Brasil. Not the most direct of routes by any means (turns out it was just too big to fit in the teeny tichy plane from Malaga to Lisbon). So we boxed it up and took it to the cargo section of the airport (operated by an ofshoot of Iberia I believe... bigger airports will have more options). Cost about €250 to send it over and would take about a week to arrive. Bear in mind this was a bulky MTB with accessories weighing in at over 20kg.
So yea, check out with freight/cargo operators, as they will usually be cheaper than DHL or similar (but it isn't door-to-door)
