Hipster tubs anyone?

GA2G you just need some tubular wheels, perfect for winter ;) -

They have too few studs, and the ones they have are all too central. You need studs near the sides to climb out small tracks in the ice, to avoid being pulled off course.
All studded tyres are judged against the hakka 240
http://www.suomityres.fi/w240.htmlI bought my Conti nordic spikes because they are manufactured in finland (hmmm coincidence?), and reputed to be as good as the revered hakka 240 (which are pricey here).
I don't think I have clearance for 40s, 35s at a push. Surlys will be good with 35s too but might also struggle with 40s.
I've asked the company for some samples to review... if I get them, I'll need a volunteer or 2 to review them. Clefty, if you have clearance you get priority (for doing such a good alarm review).
Clefty, if only we had spotted this a couple of months ago!
Sadly, the Vredestein Campo Cross 700x28 is also no longer produced.
Want!
Personally I use Michelin Wildgripper Sprint on the road.
Okay for a CX bike, too wide for a regular road bike, even with 57mm brakes. -

Winter marathons come in 35c and have a low profile, so have a better chance of fitting. They come with a reflective side wall as standard and use steel carbide studs (240 well placed ones in fact). My boss is running them and really rates them.

So those would be perfect. -

Hutchinson Acrobat [700x28]
Just ordered some of these. Should be here tomorrow. Will let you know how they fare on Saturday.
As a side note, and not knowing how the 700 differ, I have been using Specialized Crossroads run at 40ish psi on my mountain bike. Seem fine in East London today.

For all out there with tight clearances I have been finding Schwalbe Marathon plus' quite good, I run them a lot of the year, heavy yes but 25c.
Plus here in Dublin everywhere is ice, I havent seen one truck gritting or salting and I have been riding every day. -

3.7" Endomorph
I wonder what's the widest I can get on the Condor (not that I'm going to bother swapping tyres)

Anyone know of any bike shops in London that sell the Vittoria Radonneur? I need new tyres badly and can't wait for tinternet deliveries.
Also, are these any good on the front?
if you've not found anywhere yet Condor have them in stock (they did at lunch time today, even in white*) so will be well worth a look.
I'm sure they'll be fine on the front, I've not tried but am extremely happy with the one i've had on the back for the last 6-7 months. great tyre, cheap too.
I'm thinking about getting some cross tyres for my surly, might have missed the need to get on that boat though.
- which is a bad idea.

List added to the OP. Will still try to add more (Maxxis Cycloscross for example), and a studded tyre section.
Of course, opinions and personal reviews of tyres, recommendations and corrections, all welcome.

Probably update the missing tyres and add studded section, plus photos tonight.

I'm doing quite nicely on cyclocross tires. Decent grip on anything but the most polished of surfaces. Set to about 60psi

Sorry if this is a stoopid question (something I seem to be excelling at, still)...
Do cyclocross 35s need bigger clearances than touring 35s? Are the knobbly bits extra to a measurement of the inner case of the tyre?
-
• #146
I agree with almost everything this guy says.....
http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/studdedtires.aspthe link is full of honest reviews and good pics of the tyres.

yes.

So 35s with off-road tread would maybe need same clearance as 40s with road tread, or something like that. Cheers.

Peter White is a God. His light reviews are great, as are his dynamo hub reviews and his touring advice.
Only problem... as good as his website is, it's slow as hell at times and unavailable the rest of the time.

Ok received the CX Pro 30c today, it actually looks like a similar size to my Maxxis Refuse 25c, but the proof will be in the fitting tonight.
