They definitely do not qualify as cross but I agree they do give good grip. I use tiny 25c Marathon Pluses off road and find them surprisingly grippy.
I do also think cross tyres are overrated though. Big knobby MTB tyres are one thing but a couple of tiny little knobs as seen on most cross tyres doesn't really do any more than a treaded grip such as a Marathon in my experience.
