  • About to start building my first proper(ish) road bike and just wondering about buying a groupset...

...trying to keep costs down to start. I saw a few new cheaper groupsets like this Veloce one for £330 . Would I be better off with a new lower end or should I keep searching for a higher groupset second hand?

If you're planning on putting a bike together yourself, you should ALWAYS factor in the cost of tools as well. Obviously, if you have no tools this doesn't really matter too much, but if you have tools for shimano components then it will cost you a lot more than you originally thought to put together a bike with campagnolo.

the veloce groupset is good, you see it on £1,800 full carbon road bikes like the Wilier Mortirolo (overpriced yes, but people buy them).

I have no experience putting campag stuff together, so i don't know if it's easier or harder in relation to shimano. Bare in mind that shimano, sram and campag all use different shifting systems, so it would be wise to test ride bikes with a variety of groupsets before making your choice.

The new veloce groupset uses the ergo moulding on the levers (which has been migrated down the range over the past couple of years from super record), which looks pretty nice.

    Hope this helps
