my tub experience is sprinter gatorskins, i haven't ridden on other tubs so cant compare to them but the feel nice and fast.
rode them on the track whenever i got down and also to brighton with a bit of light off-roading thrown into the mix on the way, not punctures.

I've been using tubs for last 3 seasons at Herne Hill, and had 3 punctures so far. 2 vittoria chrono evos and 1 veloflex record, all of them lasted at least a season, and they are all fairly light racing tyres. Also if you are getting tubulars, it really helps to have a spare set of wheels as when you do get puncture, you aren't going to waste a whole session/meeting for a puncture.
And if you can't afford/be bothered to have a spare wheels, and mostly only ride Herne Hill, a good pair of clinchers will do you better than cheap tubs. -

Debating weather to go tubular.....hmmmmm....not convinced.

Not now, the track's covered in snow ;)
Let's settle this once and for all:
IF you are only racing Herne Hill then:
tubs are a nice luxury as they can be inflated to very high pressures and roll well, BUT you WILL need a spare wheelset on hand and you should use puncture beaded tubs, not lightweight racing ones designed for indoors (the HH surface was quite bad last year, it will not be any better this year) Despite this you will still be beaten by people running clinchers.IF you sometimes ride indoors and HH then:
it's worth having two wheelsets, clincher and tub, then you can use the tubs for posh HH races and indoors and the clinchers for training and back up, with a suitable clincher for riding on wood.IF you often ride and race indoors then:
you already know what works for you!IF you are restricted to one set of wheels:
make them mavic elipses (or similar) with vittoria diamante pro lite tyres, they work on wood and outside. a combo used by the GB team for training.recommended tubs that work at HH and indoors:
conti sprinter
vittoria corsa
any black tub which is tough and stickyrecommended clinchers that work well at HH and indoors:
vittoria diamante pro lite
conti supersonic
conti grand prix
veloflex pave
any black clincher which is light and stickyUse 22-23mm for general riding.
I'm sure there are others the list can be added to and we could get into more arguaing about who's used what and they were "fine" etc but at least as a guideline this should limit your chances of punctures and wearing out quickly, don't forget heavier riders seem more prone to punctures. for instance Symon and Iain (who probably have a combined weight of 1/2 clive's left buttock) don't know what punctures are and ride all sorts of tyres.

After today we can weight 1/2 Clive's left buttock separately for a more accurate analogy.

Well done Rob. Very useful post

I used my pro-lite rosa clinchers with Veloflex pave a few times at the arse end of the season and they are a great combo, felt nice and fast. The wheels are quite heavy, but very very stiff, so good for those carrying some weight, the tyres felt as good as road tubs.

My carbon 50's just arrived today (with carbon brake pads and QR skewers! :S) Can't see I'll ride them for a couple of months yet, but they're pretty light (especially the rim), and seem smooth enough, so if you believe its going to make you any faster and if you can justify it to yourself and your financial dependents, I'd give it a whirl.
Though then you'd have a full PX bike. OTP FTW!
ROFL - £600 and above 20%

I thought one of the main reasons that tubs are used on the track is for safety. If you have a puncture, Clinchers are prone to coming away from the rim. Tubs will give you more control just after a puncture as they stay on the rim and deflate slower.
Over 700 miles according to my computer. Mostly on the Campag pistas with tempos fitted. Got to be happy with that.
