Scary indeed. I hit 46 once downhill on a geared bike. That made me hit the brakes a few times; I'm too much of a weenie to want to go faster on a bike.
After coming off my bike and getting trapped in the frame somehow on my solid rubber tyred first proper bike, and sliding, and sliding, and sliding, and still sliding, with my face scraping the road intermittently and my elbow slowly disappearing, I had grazes right through the summer holidays and still have a couple of scars now. I hate to think what a decent crash will do to me at the speeds I ride as an adult.
I'm looking forward to never finding out.

Nudged 37.8 mph in the first floor of a pub courtesy of Rollapaluza. SS - not sure, probably only about 25-27 mph on the flat. Geared, top speed currently 52 mph (courtesy of the Cambrian Mountains).
On a regular run in Kent there are some great sections, just a little downhill gradient, where one can barrel along (geared) quite happily around 40 mph+ mark.
Coming from the top of Westerham Hill, through Biggin Hill towards Downe along the main road is my favorite. You can really get 53/12 spinning and keep it on for 2 miles or so. Especially with a chain gang.

86km/h geared, heart rate went through the roof due to scaredy cat personality, no idea on a fixie - computers are for geeks, spun out a 45x12 pretty regular but that could mean owt...

Try 35mph average for 80 laps at Newport Veledrome on a 90!
Another world class rider in our midst!
World class 4km pursuit time, and you kept it up for 20km. Well Done.

It's no big deal, Guy. I do 33mph average on my commute, and that includes stopping at lights.

Dont you get the tube?
-
• #533
I use my own system of measurement, and am averaging 894 average length cats per minute on my commute.

Oh, I know, I, of course as you are all aware, can average 36mph for 25km on an outdoor track.
I was simply commenting how there was yet another work class rider in our midst. We are over run with them these days.
Only 33mph, are you taking it easy for the winter?

I have an index based on the scowl/snigger on cabbies faces. If your spinning out at 35 mph they tend to laugh at you, if your squeezing past them in a traffic jam they tend to scowl.
Laugh - 35-40mph
grin - 25-35mph
blank 15-25mph (they haven't seen you and are about to pull out)
Scowl - less than 15mphI came across the idea when a taxi driver pulled up alongside me on a long decent and shouted "your doing 40mph!" before laughing and driving off. My legs must have been hilarious on a 69" gear.

Seriously, what's with all the bullshit on this thread?
40mph on 69GI? 192 rpm? Really?
35mph average over 20km? Really?
73mph, on a bike? Really?(Directed at everyone, not you particularly)

I have managed 200.1 RPM on 84 gear inches.

I've hit >50mph downhill in the Peaks several times on geared road bike and MTB.
Hit 60mph once in a road race coming down from Owler Bar to Baslow in the middle of the peloton, and it scared the bejeesus out of me.
It's relatively easy to get >50mph coming off Holme Moss, as long as you watch out for the nasty R bend half way down.I've hit 31mph on 42x 16 fixed, and that felt quite bouncy

I've done 40mph on 67.5", but it was downhill. hippy is my fucking witness.
I also spend quite a lot of time doing about 4mph between efforts. That's a bit spinny, as you can imagine.

The latter 2 I would also question but 192 rpm is definitely possible and I have done it regularly.
This is downhill and short downhills at that but have done it nonetheless. -

40mph
lost my fone and wallet on notting hill!

Glenn?

• #543
Sorry but that is quite slow on the rollers. A time of about 30seconds. Should be about 45 to 50.
Yes, I'm slow atm due to a swollen knee after being knocked off the bike earlier this year. I shouldn't have entered RP at all and spent the following day on strong pain killers. Which was fun.
My cadence isn't great though - I am more of a Jan than a Lance.

How did he know you were doing 40mph?
because his speedometer said it when he was driving behind you? that's probably in the region of about 34mph then as speedos notoriously over-read
Fair enough, downhill, most people can let their legs get forced round at 175-180RPM it all sounds fine for 69GI.

Knowing me, *sacking *you.

Yeah, I never said I believed the taxi driver! 69" would make it possible though!
Next time I post I will remember to include some small print clarifying - just to remove any comic effect the post might have had.

What are realistic speeds at Herne Hill in a sprint?
I've used my speedo a few times but it didn't have the sensors so it was using GPS which spike a lot and not that accurate for sprints and stuff. It had spikes of 44mph occasionally which I know are totally wrong but also some more leveled spikes of about 33/34mph, are they realistic speeds?
shocked
