Thanks for the suggestions bombcup and andy.w. I did try the old airlock trick yesterday, but have given it a prolonged burst this morning with no joy. My eardrums nearly burst on me earlier! Should have mentioned yesterday, the noise gets worse when steaming the milk, I assume this is because of the higher pressure in the boiler from heating the water to the point of obtaining steam.
I will have a look at taking it apart today, as after a bit of Googling I found a thread (on Mumsnet !!) where someone had a similar problem and found that one of the pipes from the reservoir was loose and letting in air.
