  • looks sweet
you going to go for a set or just front or what?
i like the look of only having a deep section rim as your rear but yeah, thats just me :)

  • well i'm getting one for now, for the front and then more than likely get the other after xmas. The charge scissor looks good, i completely forgot about them, might get one of those instead seeing as it's half the price of the sword. I love raw coloured frames so a scissor is looking like my next purchase!

PS. it's good to see a thread in the freestyle subforum bumped up a bit, it went pretty quiet untill recently.

  • yeah :)
just wiggle are only doing them in a medium at the moment
    :(

  • wouldn't bother with dodicci rims for heavy abuse, but if its just flatland stuff you're fine.
Personally I would stick with heavy duty touring rims, velocity chukkas etc if you want something super tough.
Also I don't rate the FBM swords that highly, overpriced for what they are, stick with the cutter, scissor etc, trick specific and tough as nails.
If you're gonna spend fbm sword money, get the new brooklyn or get an ESB from 14 bike co, probably the two best trick frames out there i'd say.

  • ESB is £675 if anyone is interested, I wish I had the money for one or a Gangsta. I think the Scissor is top of my list now for my new polo/everything bike thanks for bringing it to my attention.

  • we all love the scissor :)

I'm a little bit thrown now, i thought the dodici rims were quite strong. What other deep (deeper than dp18's) rims are there that are available on the internet. They are more than likely gonna come from a christmas present and i don't fancy sending the mother to BLB.

  • Personally and I know all you fashion conscious cunts are going to hate me for this, I don't think deep v style rims are strong enough when it comes down to tricks etc, you need heavily re-enforced, double eyeletted beefy damn rims if you wanna do tricks where you are regularly leaving/launching off the ground on your bike.
DP18's are strong as fuck yes, but as soon as you go deeper the rims are less resistant to side to side impacts, plus you also want beefy tyres on a beefy rim, a wider rim allows the tyre to spread out more allowing the impact to be better spread over the rim surface area, meaning impacts are less concentrated on the rim surface, Velocity chukkas are a good compromise and no doubt strong enough for most, but I went for Rigida Sputniks knowing that I could get them in 48H at the time and that they were strong as hell.
32C tyre on a Rigida sputnik, is going to spread the impact over the wider surface area of the rim and lessen the overall impact on the rim (as opposed to on a deep V), and of course reduce the stress on your nice and pricey hubs/spokes.
No doubt the Dodicis are probably at least as tough as deep V's I imagine, but nothing is gonna touch touring/tricks specific rims for out and out strength, especially once you get the bigger tyres on there, like I said....it all depends what you wanna do on your bike tricks wise, flatland stuff only no bunnyhops or 180's etc, and no doubt you're gonna be fine on deep V's and a set of 28C tyres at the biggest, but if you are even remotely tempted to hit that 5-6 set of stairs or other similar drops/gaps etc, then you want exactly what I spoke about before.... Rigida sputniks, 32+C tyres, although once you get above 38's they become slow as hell to ride around town, but thats the trade off for more cushioning when doing tricks etc, people like Tom La Marche, Ted, Wonka etc are running 38-42C up back and 40C plus up on the front wheels mostly....

  • I'm into tricks, but, will not 29" donwhill rim be a good choice?

  • bikes do tricks?

  • possible future porn, the new upcoming Volume Thrasher..

  • just noticed the V4 Cutter is already on winstanleys? I only bought my V3 at the end of the summer and it had just come out then!

  • The one thing I really wish they would get rid of....is integrated fucking seatclamps!

Other than that, props to volume for giving the fixed freestyle world what they want, should be an awesome set-up, however i'll be rocking one of the 14 ESB frames in the new year ;)

  • I'm into tricks, but, will not 29" donwhill rim be a good choice?

29" XC rim, you mean? when people start deciding they need 29" wheeled bike with 8+" of suspension the world is in trouble!

  • however i'll be rocking one of the 14 ESB frames in the new year ;)

    Yeah boi!

  • 29" XC rim, you mean? when people start deciding they need 29" wheeled bike with 8+" of suspension the world is in trouble!

A 8" full sus with 29" wheels would be some weird looking bike :)

Also, I dont think running 32mm tyres on 32mm wide rims is really a good idea. Lots of spokes is the way to go I'd imagine.

no speaking about forks, just the rims, I imagine that a proper Donwhill rim should be quite strong

  • Yeah but DH rims are 26" and for 2.2" and above tyres...

Niiiice! That's on my list of possibilities. It's between the Charge scissor and the leader trick f+f, or the at the other end of the price range an ESB or go all out and save for a brooklyn. I want something with a sloping tope tube, same sorta geo as the brooklyn so the leader is probably a no but i can't decide. I'll probably end up keeping the volume as an a-b bike and have my next build souly for tricks with a bmx set up pretty much. Any thoughts from people on what to go for..?

  • You can get some fairly heavy duty 29er rims, maybe not downhill rims but should take the punishment from fixie tricking. Although putting thin tyres on wide rims does not work too well as I found out at the muddy hell

Wouldn't bother with the leader, I think they're shit, cheap nasty and weak as fuck if you are planning on hitting some proper street shit on it.
Scissor rides really nice, love the geometry similar to the ESB but not quite as snappy (Ted designed both).
Love the ESB's geometry more than anything else, tight as hell back end, loads of front wheel clearance, make leaving the ground with the bike a piece of piss, and you can get it with a mid BB, plus amazing top-end tube set and materials used, whereas scissor is a little heavier, and no mid BB option. However its probably almost as strong, since Tom La Marche seems to be ripping it up on his with no major issues. In the £300ish price range, the Scissor Frame/fork is the best combo out there right now, however if you're planning on spending the big bucks, then I would say the ESB is THE frameset to have, the gorilla Frame might be nice, but they haven't even got a fork developed yet, and they are going to be VERY expensive, close to the thousand pound mark, and I think the extra cost is no way justified compared to the Brooklyn and the ESB which IMO are the two best frame/fork combo's out there right now, I haven't ridden the Brooklyn, but the ESB feels exactly how it should, like a big boys bmx :)....oh and it has ridiculous tyre clearance, 42C rear....47C front...?
    No problemo!

  • Does Ted still ride for Charge, and if yes they dont get arsey about his work for 14?

  • go james getting an ESB!
yeah he still works for charge
i think hes riding around on that titanium plug, looks pretty nice.
    really expensive though

I think it will be between the ESB and the Scissor, unless i can get a brooklyn second hand for around 500 then i'd get that. I've always wanted a brooklyn but i don't know if i can justify spending 800+ and then have the money to build it up with parts that do it justice. The charge is probably the most practical for me but i fancied something a bit different hence the ESB or brooklyn. I'll see how santa treats me this xmas and take it from there. Once again thank's for your help!
