I just got back from a short ride and clocked 36 mph from the Eyethorne turn off on the A256 to Eastry. Quite disappointed since I only managed 18 backwards circles in the middle of it. Oh well..

I rode down that way last week, but only managed 34mph for 2 miles. I'm going to blame the 25mph headwind and lack of traffic to draft. Must try harder next time.

I just cycled back out there, due to my obvious disappointment with today's ride and managed 4700mph into a gusting cyclone (~230mph winds), completed 87 backwards circles and a double front flip off a curb and after stopping for 1300 pints. I feel slightly better about myself now.

1300 pints ... sounds like how I felt on saturday morning.

Just nipped out to see if riding in the dark would make any difference. I still only managed 34mph, but I sustained it for 4 miles due to lack of sensory stimulus and therefore an enhanced focus on my pedalling form.
Oh, for safety reasons, I ride 39x19 at night.

In order to impress my spinny friend BMMF I rode BACK out there for another go using 22x20 gearing and after a quick stopover in Glasgow for a deep-fried Mars bar managed 65mph. Due to the high speeds I had to ride with my eyes closed which may have given me a small aerodynamic advantage, and for that, I apologise.

I cheated by riding with an erection - it gives an aero advantage, similar to the way modern TT frame headtubes have extra protrusions at the front. I was also wearing an aero helmet on my boner.
I only do this during nocturnal rides, so as to adhere to local by-laws.

Well, I hit a multiple of light speed backwards tonight while riding 11x56. I didn't have to take any lights, for obvious reasons. As I passed, cockerels started crowing in distant solar systems. I rode an out and back course around a couple of galaxies being born, but unfortunately didn't get a PB--they had the usual lame excuse, like 'time goes all funny at this sort of speed'--bah. Frustrating as anything. And they won't let me into HC UCI races, either. No idea why.

How far into the past were you able to see?

Was it really in the dark or were there street lights?

Was it a nocturnal (e)mission ?

Yes, but you're slow, Stephen. Go get yourself some EPO or autologous blood transfusions.

Or, as CrazyJames would recommend, some custom steroids.

Dredging this thread because I've been playing with my Knog NERD a bit recently and a bit obsessed with speed and stats at the moment.
Need to send it back for a replacement because my backlight has never worked, but it's really good - the wireless doesn't seem to be affected by any interference and I'm sure I'm getting pretty accurate figures - calibrated properly using the chalk + tape measure method and cross referenced with Sheldon's calibration table.
Max so far is 33.6mph coming down York Way (on my commute). The sets of lights further up mean you need a clear run and no traffic in the way to get over 32. Managed 32.4 going down Camden Road yesterday when some nodder tried to race me :)
Running 48/17 (74") - hoping I can go faster to be honest.

We shouldn't forget speed records set by riders of faired recumbents.

New record eh? I'd love to visit Battle Mountain.

42mph on a MTB with thin (relatively speaking) tires, down a BIG hill...

and no clothes

37.6 mph fixed 48:18. Could probably go faster but don't have the necessary balls. Saddlescombe Boad out of Brighton.

• #497
What rpm is that? Done 37 on 46x16 downhill and didn't think a) I could keep it up for long b) you could go much faster at that gearing. What rpm is 37.4 @ 48*18? My rough guess says if u can do that then you should get your ass to the next rolla
-
• #498
37.6mph in 48/18 is 180rpm. Going >180rpm on the road does move into 'necessary balls' territory. Things get a bit skittish if it's a downhill section*.
*it's not that hard to 200+rpm in a pissy gear on the flat.

I'll make the most of it, thanks. I've heard how hard it is to coax the legs round at your age.
We'll have to get babydinotrackboy to test you...
