  • Actually not sure if I used Pancetta or serrano ham last time.

    Meh

  • Thats a fair diversion from your local chippys fare, wouldn't you say knackers?

  • We were discussing the relative merits of a specific fish, not a chippy.

I'm not a big fan of fish and chips- it is seldom done well, certainly from a trad chippy.

  • To be fair on Australia, despite everything else, they do have barramundi, which is tasty in extremis.

  • The trouble with fish and chips (particularly in our cities) is it's so often just plain disappointing.
Fresh fish, fresh batter and crisp chips are alas a rarity.
Great when you do find them though.
Was presented with a "delicacy" of a soup made with fish's womb once in Japan, which I politely consumed - all the while trying to turn off a section of my brain.
Luckily as with many of such things it was not very interesting at all. Couldn't wait for the next course....
Some Japanese pickles have the aroma of the bin, must be said.

  • that eyeball soup that han solo ate when he was in indiana jones looked pretty nauseating.

  • that's pretty funny
Fish & Chips are awesome, haven't had them outside Britain but I'm 100% certain that as the inventors, we will do it the best. This rule doesn't apply to sports.

    Agree.

    Not.

    Brit f&c = shit.

  • Haribo = shit

  • that eyeball soup that han solo ate when he was in indiana jones looked pretty nauseating.

    haha...

you guys do have mushy peas though, which I must say are simply fabulous.

  • Agreed, although I'd stick with "nice" as a descriptor.

  • jellied eels got to be the worst thing we invented-filth, taste like ashtrays

  • Last time this subject came up Balki 'recommended' Balut.

  • Agree.

    Not.

    Brit f&c = shit.

you have to travel to Yorkshire for the good stuff

    it* is *shit in London

  • Agreed, although I'd stick with "nice" as a descriptor.

Im feeling a bit more extravagant than that today, Hippy...

Last time this subject came up Balki recommended Balut.

I dont think 'recommended' is quite the right word.

  • you have to travel to Yorkshire for tripe don’t you?

  • looking at that article of balut made me gip

  • No, I've eaten Lutefisk and genuinely felt like vomiting. It smells horrendous too. What the fuck is Lye anyway?

Lutefisk is vile. I blame the Swedes for it. I've eaten it a few times and although some things do taste better when you grow older, that dish is not one of them.

But I do like fish and chips. I've understood that, at least according to a Kiwi I know, in NZ it is some species of shark (the cheap stuff, at least). And that it's rarely good fish as it is supposed to be not that fine dining.

Salt and vinegar are a fantastic combination. I just wish we'd have decent crisps, here.

  • only old people still eat tripe

it's something to do with the war

  • Taro (or Dasheen) = rank filth. Had it fried, mashed, taro chips etc and it always comes out grey tasting like you are eating a stick.
    Which you are.

  • Chitterlings is where it's at
    Raw if you can..

  • and what's the deal with airline food?

  • Areed... the fuckers on Emirates are only serving Verve Cliquot in first class nowadays.

    Its gone to shit.

  • Airline food is ok. You need to change your carrier.

  • Oh, and I find Korean food not that good. The taste of it can be quite delightful, but at least in Seoul they really went full hog with gristle and other not-too-savory bits.

  • I'll be on an A380* tomorrow...

*only plane with sufficient weight allowance :P
