  • ouch........lol .its a budget ride all good so far

  • hi everyone, new guy here, came across this thread which is very similar to what im currently doing right now. Basically i Have a Dawes Horizon which is geared and i wasnt to convert to SS as i dont use gears, at all! i have a budget of under £300 but im after decent quality parts, the bike is a bit of a mess right now, needs a new BB, cranks, chainrings, and wheels. I have just installed a new brake system on it as its my work bike :). I have all the tools needed for such a job but im pretty clueless as to where to start.

I have removed all useless parts, derailleurs etc. and I get the odd occasion of crazy chain slip (but i remedy this by bringing along a spanner). I am currently fishing around for a new BB and compatible crankset with chainring which is SS friendly. Any ideas??

Much appreciated, this forum has provided me with much learning material over the past weeks/months but Im at a confusing stage lol.

  • oh and if you need any onfo, i have it all at hand so its easily providable.

  • I found an old peugeot esprit in my friends shed so decided to convert.

    It started off like this:

There was a bit of surface rust, no issue, but the stem and bottom bracket were well and truly siezed. The stem needed a week's worth of caustic soda treatment whereas the bottom bracket had to be removed using brute force and the trusty blow torch. After nitromors and a lot of sanding it ended up looking like this:

I was tempted to leave it raw but decided to prime it, paint and clearcoat it. I used montana 94 in cosmos violet which is really low pressure and gives a nice opaque colour and then sprayed on some metallic flakes before clearcoating it with montana hardcore.

The photos are exceptionally rubbish, i'll try and get some decent ones sometime.

  • That's fired me up to get in the garage tomorrow. Have a Carbolite 103 that I picked up off AndyW currently stripped to the frame needs building up.

  • u got any pics stigblack

  • Hi all,

New to the forums here so I cannot post a new thread yet.. Anyway I've recently picked up an old Peugeot bike which I'm half way through the process of converting (slowly I might add!) I've heard about all this fuss about BB some French others Swiss and some British. Is there anyway I can identify mine, I've used the search function and haven't really found anything,
I've attached a picture and the serial number(s?) are below

Y905 04893 that was on the bottom of the bike.

BS6102 was on a sticker on the bike

And there was a sticker saying made by Peugeot in Bedford, just because it's made in England doesn't make it English right?

    Thanks!

  • i have the same. it's 85-88. i guess you already went here?

  • I have a Peugeot with the same decal set which makes it an 88 give or take a couple of years, bb was English and i had no trouble popping a new one in there! good luck!

  • Thanks guys, Good news! I think i'll go out and buy a new bb and crank set this weekend!

  • Oh also, another question (sorry) do you know what size bottom bracket would fit into the peugeot above? I can't really remove it to measure and didn't know if anyone would know?

  • @Stig. Nope, will post some when I get there. Saddle soaped the Bernard Heinault Turbo which has come up well. BB stripped and partially cleaned. Mavic risers. Lots to do.

  • Pull it out.

  • Pedals: mks sylvans/on one double clips/on one double straps

Those straps are totally shite. I mean they'll stretch when you pull up. I can recommend the Exustar doubles or some Toshi singles as alternative cheapish straps.

  • at least anything that are laminated really.

  • +1

  • Pretty!

  • Hi there, I am new. This is my first fixed gear, and a Peugeot, so this is as good a place as any for a first post. It isn't totaly finished, I am awaiting a saddle and bars so I just put some stuff on to get riding.
Let me know what you think, cheers.

  • nice build mate, looks like fun. I'm not a fan of those bars, but if you like them, that's all it matters.

I would take a link or two off that chain though

  • Hmmmm... Dare I say.

    Foot Retention...?

  • been mentioned, it doesn't matter if he have a front brake.

  • Man that looks good.

Currently have an old Puch (yeh its pretty heavy-but alright lug work) and its in the middle of being rubbed down ready to be painted/fu**ed up.

Luckily for my bike; my friend has lots of tools, angle grinders, welding equipment etc so I can go crazy and start cutting and ruining stuff. Cant wait to get stuck in.

    Good job!

  • Thanks people.
I promise it is getting a brake pretty soon, as soon as the handlebars turn up, but I may double up on safety and get some Hold-Fast straps if they will fit DMR V8 pedals...(this is the first time I have ridden a fixed gear)

  • So here' my conversion, I bought this peugeot about 6 years off ebay and rode it as a roadbike but now I converted it to singlespeed for commuting, love this bike despite it's old and heavy ;)
