Yes to cup of tea! And sympathy. You nice person you. But I vote No to free bike. Yes to beater-build, as an act of goodwill, at cost. I'm sorry she's crying but maybe that's necessary, treat it as a 'learning moment', she needs to understand the whole supply and demand thing with 'second hand' bikes is actually built on stolen stuff sold for crack.
Completely agree Skully, you're talking sense. I'm definitely too soft. However she's left the office now so the stern game face that you all know is going back on...

to be honest the person who received stolen goods does not deserve a great deal of sympathy
she could be directed to here to investigate building a beater, and if she asks nicely someone will probably help
a case of caveat emptor, and if a bargain is too good to be true then seriously question why

an excellent conclusion. How about sorting out all of those people with a cheap bike in the stolen bikes thread? thought not

• #130
gotta say, I'm kind of with BRM (and others). If you buy anything second hand, then there is a risk that it is gonna be nicked, and you have to make a judgment about how dodgy the situation is and act accordingly.

BRM
I'd not want to fuck you if I were drunk or sober
Sorry dude

lambswool?
Im pretty sure its synthetic.

Can't believe you really considered of building her a bike, even at cost! Fuck me sideways, I'm going to nick a nice Pista Concept or Cinelli Mash, just what I'm after. If I get caught you lot will sort me out with something anyway. What a great community!
Glad you got your bike back though. Fuck the girl, what did she think she's doing? Just because you don't know doesn't mean you're not guilty!

DJ - If i wanted to fuck you (drunk or sober), you'd have no say in the matter.

^ Ha! Apparently i must spread rep.

Actually, I reckon it could (and should) be done. Would seem like a good endeavour and given all of the classifieds selling old parts for cheap it's not like anyone would be loosing out. Perhaps a little effort in co-ordination but even the least of our friends should be worth a little effort. As for this girl, lessons don't need to be the harshest possible to be learnt.

Yeah, you're right, doing nice things for people is evil and we should always assume the worst.

How about a forum spare bike pool? If anyone has a beater they don't mind lending to another forumenger who's had a bike nicked while they sort another one out then we really would be the saints of the road. I'd happily put in my 'winter bike' as a starter.*
*in the summer obviously as it's now winter

nice idea, but i dont think many people are going to give away stuff for free if they know they can get money for it.

i think a lot of this goes on outside the forum anyway.
in the words of the great caninus testiculus - "this is london, my friend". hundreds of people get their bikes nicked.
we would benefit more by snap-kicking any friend, family member, acquaintance or colleague, who we know has purchased a stolen bike.

Unknowingly being unlawful is still illegal! That's my point. The girl can cry as much as she wants but that doesn't change the fact that she wasn't interested in where the bike came from in the first place. I know it's Gumtree but what would you say if someone steals your TV from you, then you happen to go to a party where you discover your own TV. Thief gives it back to you but you insist on giving him your older TV he left which was in your bedroom... Come on...
Sorry if that doesn't make sense. Bit tired.

Where the hell did I say free? I said cheap, as in beater, as in functional bike of passable quality parts. Pay attention.
-
• #145
FFS sake when people post 'I've just been robbed of my beloved bike... help me', lots of people offer beater parts all the time, or if someone starts a begging thread for cheapo beater stuff, they get replies.
Yeah she fucked up. She knows that now, which is why she realised she had to give it back and take the £150 loss on the chin (she turned down money to buy it back!). Now what's so wrong in showing her how it should be done, if she's interested?

there's been a classified section for some time ;)

This is fucked. Seems to me like this person didnt consider the possibility it was stolen. Naive, sure... but fuck... its a worse reflection on the state of this city than it is on her. I dont buy this "fuck her" bullshit.
Fuck the dude that pinched it in the first place. Anger misdirected.

How do you know she wasn't interested. Perhaps the guy was very convincing with a backstory of where it came from and why he was selling it. Perhaps she asked but didn't know enough to ask the right questions. And I'm not suggesting giving anything at all, I'm suggesting selling her something out of stuff that is already for sale.
Parts get sold, forumengers get money, girl keeps riding a bike, win all round. I can't see a problem with it.

Buying off gum tree and meeting someone on a street corner is pretty dodgy.
Meet at house / flat.
No way, man. I have sold stuff on Craigs List before (US's GT) and I don't want people coming to my home. Also, don't want to go to peoples' homes. So I meet on the street. it's safer.

Always in favour of a good snap-kicking. Mind you I just don't snap-kick chicks any more. The last time I tried I had to pay for the whole dinner.
i can't believe people are suggesting the replacement of gumtree girl's ride.
fuck me drunk.
i might go and buy a stolen bike (really cheaply), so you fuckers will build me another one if i get caught.
there are risks with buying **anything **secondhand and everyone knows that. she bought cheap - she paid the price.
