Thanks guy, I'm going for 50x15 purely because i have a 50 tooth chainring and a 15 sprocket. And the 88 gear inches was based on 23mm clinchers. I won't be running tubs just yet.

27" is a nominal measure used for standarisation - 50x15 is 90" in these terms, which is at the high end of the scale for Herne Hill. Your knees will thank you for staying in the mid-80's (more info here). You only need a bigger gear (90"+) when you're being paced. Trying to turn 100" over unpaced into a headwind at Herne Hill would be an epic amount of anti-fun.
