Kerry Dixon joined from Reading in the summer of 1983 along with Pat Nevin, Joe McLaughlin, Nigel Spakman and Eddie Neiswicki (sp?). Those new signings transformed Chelsea and started its revival. At the end of 1982/3 Chelsea almost dropped to Div 3 for the first time. One game, away at Bolton, kept us up. Promoted as champions we then finished sixth in div 1. In 1987/8 the league introduced play offs for relegation as well as promotion. As fourth from bottom, Chelsea played Boro over two legs and were relegated. They returned as Champions next season with a record number of points. The relegation play off idea was dropped. Since then Chelsea have remained in the top flight and are one of only a few sides to be ever present in the Premiership.
Kerry Dixon joining Chelsea was the start of the good times. The shite days were earlier than that.
