I studied Furniture design so a lot of its in my head (often my own version!) from books. 1000 chairs by Charlotte and Peter Fiell is a good reference book to get a feel for whats what and when it was made etc.
These days there is an awful lot of info on Wiki etc for the production history of the better known stuff and the people like Vitra and SCP who sell the new stuff will usually have an explanation of materials and production history etc.
