distance between your hands and distance from your knees. HUGE factor in pedaling when out of the saddle. Similarly, if you're riding a fixed gear, it makes a difference when slowing down quickly as well.
wider bars give you a lot more leverage to pull the bike into your pedal stroke. if you aren't pulling the bike into your pedal stroke, you're riding like a pansy.
The point that was made was that riding brakeless with drops cannot be done as the rider cannot stop with drops.
I tend to disagree as I ride brakeless with drops and can stop just as easily as with flats/risers. I do use the drop part of the bars though where a very strong grip can be obtained for braking and accelerating (actually far better for accelerating than flats IMO)
