tika, sorry about your hubby's bike. What colour Brompton was it, and what colour was the B17?
Also, don't all nurseries have CCTV covering their entrances? Not possible to get a copy of footage, then show to police?

I agree 100,000% with what Edscoble has said. There is a lot of scaremongering about bike thefts, many, if not nearly all, would have been avoided by security measures heavily promoted on this forum.
Sorry, Ashe, but I'nm afraid this is nonsense. If we're ever going to do something effective against theft, we must avoid putting the onus on the user alone. The problem must be tackled at source. Blaming users only plays into the thieves' hands.

Oliver, I'd like to have the faith in human nature that you do. But my belief is that the oldest profession isn't prostituition as has been oft told, but thievery.
Theft will always exist, and it can even be found in the animal kingdom, where David Attenborough can be heard to wax lyrically about such monkey endeavours. My standpoint is that, if theft is such an inevitability, then is it not best to plan to effectively combat this?
Any attempt to tackle thievery at source, would be met with failure. To wit, is it not relatively well known that millionaire wives living within walking distance, have been often caught stealing from Marks and Spencer at Marble Arch? There is no need to steal, as their funds would easily purchase anything they saw, but the theft is commited anyway.
Similarly, some thefts are opportunistic, with the thief not even needing to steal the item, but just found it in a vulnerable position, and lifted it. I really can't agree with Slaytanic on anything other than this one point, that thieves will steal. I just don't feel that any social engineering efforts will alter that.

The source of the problem is merely people buying stolen bicycle almost knowlingly so, and if there's people who are willing to pay their moderately-earned cash on stolen bicycles, there's always going to be a market for stolen bicycles.

Ashe, my point was simply that you were wrong to claim that 'many, if not nearly all [bike thefts], would have been avoided by security measures heavily promoted on this forum'.

Hi everyone,
I had my lovely little bike stolen this morning from W6 (Shepherds Bush Road)It was a Specialized Globe 2008 Women’s Hybrid Bike Grey, 53 cm - in very good condition - with new back wheel. It is probably stripped and lying on a bonfire now : ( but would appreciate anyone keeping an eye out.
Many Thanks

100% percent agree.. the people who buy stolen bikes are as deplorable as those who steal them.

STOLEN - Kingston/Hampton court area. My winter trainer has been theived from the shed - along with bikes from all the neighbours gardens. Pre-xmas rush for all the people willing to buy stolen bikes apparantly!
It's a trek 1200sl in red/paprika colour, 56cm frame, shimano 105 groupset, grey/black planet x seat, polar sensor on the front fork. PM me if you see it anywhere! (slim chance I know).
And? I know a fair few people that visit this site from the Midlands. So what?
I asked because it's a bit unusual to post a stolen bike from Wolverhampton in a London forum, isn't there's a Wolvehampton cycling forum where you can post your stolen bike and increase the likeihood of it getting spotted dramatically?
gotta support pistol here - the more the word is spread, the better, and a lot of people from the west midlands do use this site - hence the birmingham fixed gear subforum.also, some people spend time in both places - i live in london, for instance, but regularly visit my girlfriend in birmingham - and she also works in wolverhampton.
good luck pistol, i hope the police manage to help you somehow seeing as you have the number plate, although i must admit my faith in the police is somewhere in the negative region.

Just had my Brooks B67 and black no name seatpost nicked from the top of brick lane. Not a biggie really as I still have the bike. But not really looking forward to having to buy another and breaking it in all over again!
Had a look round Sclater St. A couple of crack heads commenting "need a saddle for that mate?" laughing, in a slightly annoyingly knowing kind of way.
Couple of pics in case anyone see's it about...

my babe got stolen 2 weeks ago in Clerkenwell out of the office building ( posted it, but as server broke down.... post is gone, bla bla bla)
got this fucker even on cctv and could see how he nicked it, awfule when the abstract becomes a face. but I haven't reconized him. but must be a buddy from a courier or driver who is often in our building a nd say my bike. he knew exactly what to do ( bike was parked in a more hidden spot) and how to open the outside gate from the inside with the bike.
he looked like one of us... tall, dark hair...more important: if you see my bike let me know...
thanks a lot... hope we can help each other....

Anyone get a vibrant Orange Road Bike stolen recently?
Unsure of exact specifications because I was far away and only got a glimpse of it.
Saw a shady character holding it on the corner of a street then walked off with it. Middle-eastern/Mediterranean guy, like the type that sell you cigarettes on the streets. It had:
White taped (I think) drops
Large Orange frame.
Possibly white rims.If anyone... I saw this on Seven Sisters Rd, Holloway.
Good luck and godspeed.

Shit loads of brooks saddles down Brick lane today, the used bits stall guys had a couple and a fella was trying to flog 2 of those b67s on Bethnal green rd, he seemed to be fully aware of their price. I noticed DS, i think, in tipex lettering under one.

aids to all of them, fucking turds
-
• #2997
Thanks man, I did have a look up and down Bethnal Green road and didn't see any, but didn't fancy leaving the bike alone much longer. Having a bike quite obviously missing a saddle with me probably made finding stolen saddles a bit harder...
I'd locked the bike outside my studio, so I'll keep checking the area.
Half thinking about setting up a weatherproof webcam or something up here to keep an eye on it...

never actually posted it as stolen, but on the way to school today i saw MY peugeot equipe chained to a lamp-post, so i called the plod and they said if i could get it off and prove it was mine i could give it a shot, one quick call to my dad later and he was down with the bolt cutters, job done!
so if anyone says their knackered red peugeot got stolen from outside Alleynes, they are a funder of bike theivery and should be put down like the mongrel they are.

I agree 100,000% with what Edscoble has said. There is a lot of scaremongering about bike thefts, many, if not nearly all, would have been avoided by security measures heavily promoted on this forum.
Bikes are far safer if properly secured, than not.
There is an instance of someone using 1 Fagh Mini, and two other good locks on one bike, who woke up in shock to find their bike stolen. It transpired that the owner only applied expensive locks to their bike, but didn't lock their bike to anything. The communal hallway in which it resided was easy pickings for a thief.
Another guy let someone try out their bike, yes, a total stranger, and was shocked to see the stranger not return. [This was tragic, because the owner had only shown faith in human nature, and was badly let down]
A lady recently had her bike stolen, and saw the thief in action. She later intimated that "maybe" she had not properly secured her lock to the bike.
As Ed has said, when good security procedures are put in place, and not obviously leaving a bike outdoors overnight, or for 24 hours, then you have maximized the chances of retained ownership of your bike.
Its no use coming on here and expecting sympathy when a £1,000 bike has been locked with a £10 cable-lock.
