Personal psi / tyre pressure choices

  • The Veloflexes are very, very thin-walled and flexible - it really doesn't feel like 135 when you're riding, even over long (DD, for instance) distances.

    +1
My fixed has a Pave on the rear and a master on the front. I ride that bike purely for plesure, so automaticaly ran them at about 110 psi for comfort. After some experimentation I found that 130 psi felt alot nicer*.

(*nicer being a combination of feeling fast and feeling comfortable)

Having them at pretty much full pressure also seems to reduce their propensity to puncture a bit.

In a few hundred kilometers, I will be forced to replace the rear Pave. If I make it (touches wood), it will be the first tyre I have completely worn out, without ever puncturing.

  • I spent a year only pumping my tyres up with a zefal handpump every few weeks, they were shitty 25cs. never got a single puncture. I weigh 57kg though. Now pump to 100psi once a week (23c) because my track pump can't go any higher. Thinking of getting one that at least goes to 120 and keeping it above 100

Why? Are you a cossetted middle classer who wants to experience the hard knocks for a bit?

  • I've (technically) never ridden one, since 11 laps of Hillingdon is not 10mi.

Suffice to say, my fastest time for any distance is at least 10 seconds faster than anyone else's time.

Well you wouldn't want a warm beer would you?

Good work! You've hit the 2 second flying 200m?

  • "at least 10 seconds faster"..

My flying 200 is measured in milliseconds..

    like my sex life.

    BOOM TISH

  • road racing/TT/Track in the dry 10 bar front and rear, road riding normally is 8 bar in the dry, and 7 for wet, Track goes up to 12 or more on the rear special occasions

  • How do people measure psi? The needle on my Lidl track pump has never worked, I just guess at the moment. I have utfs, lots.

  • Buy a proper track pump or a pressure gauge.

You can tell by hand if you're in the ballpark but only if you have an idea of values first.

  • Search works!

Can I ask for some advice: has anyone come across an inner tube wearing on the inside adjacent to the end of the spokes?

I use 23c Armadillos on open pros with 120psi front and rear and had a rear puncture to the tube from inside wear - the rims are well built up with tape - any ideas or thoughts as to the cause?

  • Probably the recent earthquakes.

  • 110psi
on my fixie And my bmx

  • commie

is that rim tape or electrical ?

  • With my hand pump up to 100-110 psi. For the tubulars I pack some xtra from the track pump without a gauge. It supposed to go up to 160 psi, but I can't be sure (my tubs can go up to 220). Who knows? I only blew up one inner tube with the clincher, but tubs are ok and rock hard :-)

  • i run my schwalbe blizzard sports at their max (110psi), anyone have any idea what i could run them at before explosion? on open sports if it makes any difference..

  • around 107.738

  • @Commie, as dancingjames was trying to deduce from you, can you tell us what rim tape you use?

It could be that you are either not using rim tape on that particular rim, or it has slipped sideways and upwards in one place, exposing the spoke-end, which will be rubbing on the naked tube.

THx DJ & GA2G - rims were built (by Pete @ Rat Race) with decent rim tape, which is fully intact/looks like new. When I changed the inner tube, it was worn adjacent to each spoke end? THis was the rear wheel, pumped daily to 120psi. Bizarre!

  • are the spokes too long - can you feel them through the rimtape?

  • thx again - you have cracked it - I could definitely feel "bulges" under the rim tape.

  • Pete @ Rat Race's reputation takes a hit.

  • 110 psi front and rear (Schwalbe Durano/Continental 4000 on 23mm rim). This is I think what roadies I spoke to recommended. I'm not heavy though, and I've found 110 on wet roads/cobbles can get slippery, so sometimes drop to 100 or lower if commuting in the rain. Still high enough to stop punctures, but less sketchy.

  • 120 and rubino's. and i'm light. flyin.

  • 23mm tyres @ 100psi front and 110psi rear. Memory has retained something about the lower front to help absorb road buzz and lumpy bits of tarmaccadam.

  • I have no idea. But softer than most people's because otherwise I bump around on the bike like a skeleton on a, er, thing that would make a skeleton bounce. Like a skeleton on a bike with normal tyre pressure. There.
