For the days where the temperature is below 10, I got myself a winter bib from wiggle, and shorts of your choice over that to not look like catwoman.
Very decent, keeps knees warm and all. Winter riding not a problem.
When the temperature drops to around zero I usually wear merino base and mid layer, bib & shorts, jacket on top, big hat that covers ears and some winter gloves. Toasty and warm.
The padded part of those bibs is much better than the padded shorts I normally wear.
Not sure about the 'larger' body layout, as I am a weedy programmer guy, but yeah, with shorts over it won't bulge too much I guess.
