  • I've read everything about the wilier is on here and the consensus seems to be overpriced at 800,
What do people think about it at 650?
My geared bike failed on friday, split on the bottom bracket seat tube weld, been wanting to go fixed for a while, now have an excuse, but I really can't handle the tube anymore and I've only been on it 2 days. - So im looking at otp.
Was just going to grab a cheap steel bike - fuji or a lemond fillmore but this big foreign dude in evans (similar build to me, 6' 2 and about 16 stone) said that the small diameter steel tubes would flex to much, he had been riding them and said they were all over the place. Any opinions?

  • lose some weight

Yes. He's talking out of his arse.

Just because someone works in a bike shop does not mean that they are right.

the flex obviously depends on the tubing, there are so many different types of reynolds, columbus, dedacciai, etc. Also dont forget flex is often a useful thing to have.

Many steel frames are very stiff, I know my columbus road frame is rock solid, and have read a few posts on here complaining about the stiffness of the bianchi pista which is made of plain gauge tubing I think.

Tour de ville have some nice Chesini track frames made from large diameter dedacciai steel tubing.

There are many choices for you, including off the peg. I just think the willier is a dull as fuck overpriced/glorified langster. GA2G is always going on about how fat he is, and how much he likes his giant bowery.

I normally don't even bother talking to them such is the crap they come out with but I felt almost compelled to believe him as he wasn't trying to sell me anything.
I'll go give a fuji a go then, never ridden steel before and my old bike was pretty stiff alu so dont know what to expect?
I've been looking at a dolan pre cursa too, quite tempted.

    ^That's made my mind up.
    WANTED:
Wilier Pista, Large (58cm). Cash waiting.

It is fairly dull, it was more a case of being desperate for a replacement and thinking "I could probably make this look decent" but for 650 I'd want it to look good straight off the bat.
It's going to be off the peg as I can't wait, the dolan I mentioned above can be with me in a week according to Terry D.

  • Anybody have any idea why the Wilier Pista doesn't appear on the Wilier webiste, and why specifications for this bike seem not to exist?? The current 2010 model is all over the shops (well, at least Cycle Surgery) but it's as if Wilier isn't supporting their own model... I simply cannot find any information on this bike...

  • I think its likely that the Pista is the Laverado, but with track ends/drop-outs.

Edit:: Or they have foisted a Chinese frame on the fgss market, and hope to clean up.

  • got this cleared up....basically, it's a cycle surgery exclusive - they go to wilier, say hello can you make us a singlespeed bike, paint it black, make it attractive, e poi cosa fanno?... wilier adapts a nice alu existing frame, paints black, adds miche, and voila...the pista in its essence

  • I've since realised that the frame is the La Triestina, but it appears to possess different seatstays and comes with trackends.
IMO the 2008 model sh*t all over the all black 2009 model.

But I guess they changed it from the red because it looked too much like the Trek T1.

  • No, it's a Pista. 'Triestina' refers to Wilier's home town, Trieste. It's 'Wilier Triestina' on all their frames (including mine).
    ;-

  • Columbus even made a tubing for big bastards....SPX or something.

My friends wife is from Trieste, she makes amazing Dolci.

  • My friend's wife is from Trieste, she makes amazing Dolci.

    I'll bet she does...

  • my mind works laterally too big man. never too tired or sated to think about food.

  • This may sound nuts, but as a pista owner, I've been toying with the idea of putting on some MTB bars and turning the thing into a singlespeed cyclocross affair. However, I'm concerned about two things: how robust the wheels are, and clearances for nobbier tires.

So: has anyone taken a similar singlespeed (langster, paddywagon, flyer, even the pista) and thought of, attempted, or even converted to cyclo-x? If so...how'd you do it?

  • I've just realised that (as stated previously above) the Wilier Pista is a CycleSurgery exclusive, ......but only on these shores. Its available in red or black in other places. Its a bit shitty really of Cycle Surgery to offer the black version a year after the red one, and say its the "new model". A change of colour surely isn't enough to call a bike a new model, ...AND put up prices from the year before??!!

Clearly that was not true, as the red model and the black model sell side by side at www.bikebuster.com.

  • @Abu_Lang, I'd use a minimum of 32 spoked wheels for cyclocross, but I'd rather go for 36 spoked wheels. The standard Wilier Pista wheels are built for lightness, and I doubt would hold up as well in fast riding over ruts and small branches, and coming down stony or rutted declines.

  • Awesome thanks for the tip! Agree about the spokeage...I think at the very moment I'm more worried about tire clearance, can't seem to find anything to would remotely fit (for obvious reasons, the pista frame is not designed to accommodate a fat cyclo tire...)

  • A bit of a newbie here, but doesn't the spec. on the Willier Pista sill look a bit expensive this year at £900 quid?

Just trying to get some perspective from the 'experts' :-)
