the dell outlets pretty good for getting cheap laptops. had mine for a few years now and no real problems.
mac's are great if you sleep on a pile of cash. they're very shiny.
oh, if you want a decent operating system i can't recommend ubuntu enough. its geared for novices in unix and most of the drivers work straight away. you never need to buy software and can run windows programs on it too with a little bit of trickery. xp sucks.
