Lights should be fine

if you do get a hi-vis then please replace it regularly (like once a year or something). I see so many ppl out and about with faded hi-vis jackets that are so faded they're just pale yellow with zero luminescence anymore.
amen - in the car this morning noticed so many people with faded hi viz on and it's hardly any more noticeable than 'normal' clothing.
Also, you really notice a rear light more than hi viz from a distance in a car. A valuable thing to realise for me this morning

Also replace batteries in lights. Nothing is worse than a blinky on half power. Better yet get recharagables and recharge them often even if the light still seems bright.

There's nothing cool about being smooshed by a vehicle that didn't see you.
But that doesn't mean you need to go get a bright yellow nodders jacket.
Just put on enough reflective stuff (on your bag, go look at Two'n'fro's Claqs), make sure you have adequate rear lighting (not those pathetically small ones) and that batteries are never more than a month old (LEDs aren't very good at communicating low battery, and they might look bright when you first light them but them dim rapidly)... and finally make sure you're front lighting is adequate to be seen.
Adequate lighting in my opinion is: Highly visible at 50m in torrential rain. So if you're relying on the smallest "minimal is cool" LED... you got it wrong.

It's called a washing machine, I get the impression most people don't think you need to wash bike cloths, hi viz or not.

I prefer to dress in dark clothes but use bright lights just in case I need to go into stealth cyclist mode suddenly. I treat every car as though it wants to kill me anyhow so I don't rely on my lights to be seen as such. Saying that I would never ride at night without them. That would pretty much waive away any rights I would have if someone were to drive into me and is pretty idiotic

That's why 1992 was much safer for young cyclists
You sure that ain't Hoxton circa last year?

Greetings folks,
I have read the thread and there are some good points on here. Like a lot of things in life the answer is are not always a simple yes or no, neon / hipster, lights / high viz, one or the other answer.
The solution is a bit, or lot as the case may be, of both lights and high viz....
On the recent circle line ride I was rocking a fibre flare (which gets a mention on here) - they really do give out a lot of light for just 2 x AAA batteries. It got a few comments as it is a quality light... MA3K mentions the respro bands on this thread. I rode next to/ near him for a lot of the ride and his right ankle was very bright as a result. I have a few of these wrapped around my already reflective timbuk2 bag. Once again these are a good quality product. He also had a Claq on his grobag pouch thing – once again this is a great product – very bright and easy to attach.
In the dark days of winter it is all about being safe and seen. But just because you are all lit up it don’t be lolled in to a false sense of security, you must still take care...
As they used to say back in the day – be safe , be seen.
So something to reflect on - Ride safe people and keep up with the bright ideas....,
Peace and Love,
Tim -

for a £5'er at IKEA you can get a decent scotchlite, workers / site reflective jacket
the more a car can see you the less likely it is of killing you
hi-vis for the win -

The orange one is garish but I kinda like the traffic cone look.
Would probably wimp out and go for the safe option of the grey/blue one on the left.
I wimped & went orange - I am at one with Sunday Times reading nodderism
As for cars not seeing you for early morning/dark rides, I use a helmet mounted exposure jostick - on high beam you can project light (a la - Place de l'Alma underpass) at any motorist who you think is potentially going to pullout or simply hasn't seen you in their mirrors - combined with a powerful front light (a MaxxD for me), I used to have cars pulling out in front of me regularly & knew that it was a matter of time before I was hit.
As for rear - I use an illuminated Bump cover, Blackburn Mars 4 & exposure red eye
The above is veering on overkill, but with mouths to feed, they would prefer me in one piece!
PS -But still every morning, there are at least two cyclists in all black & no lights......WTF, they even apologise when I mention that I can hardly see them, let alone a car

Eat ready brek, it should be a stable in any riders diet. It makes you glow NAGating the need for high viz.

Everybody should study the right things to wear.
Why not do both with these.
I have dual red Spokelits and I looks the biz if I do say so myself.
Also need flashy front and rears. Turn 'em on even if it's just starting to get dark, people tend not to pull out on you when they see an epilepsy inducing strobe light coming their way. (unless they've got epilepsy)
