Are OTPs approaching custom standards?

I added comment to this thread because I feel that efforts by Kona, etc, are making made-to-measure harder to justify for SOME (but not all) people.

all they did is use expensive part* on a bicycle instead of cheap part and charge £1800 (Kona Grand Wagon for example)

*part that we'll eventually upgrade to.
