No money changed hands, though it's a good idea and if anyone wants me to rig it then I'll take bids.
I counted by simply asking the database to give me the millionth post that is still visible (not been soft deleted by the spam detection engine or anything like that).
I can run the query again but it's going to give me the same answer.
Why could you be wrong when you witnessed it at the time? Because the stats on the home page are cached for up to 5 minutes as they don't change so frequently and aren't so critical that I want to re-query them every time the page shows.
Hippy may just have had the last post that you witnessed before you saw the stat refreshed. Just to confuse things further... the stats are different on server #1 and server #2, so depending on your IP address you can see different things from other people... this is just because the 5 minute refresh thing depends precisely on when the server was brought online and the 5 minute thing isn't precise... the first request after 5 minutes refreshes the cache, so the timings go out of sync.
Anyhow... database doesn't lie, but the layers of caching can be misleading. Dicki does have it.
