The definitive OTP ( Off-The-Peg ) List (<£500 and <£1,000 sections)

I got a steamroller just over 4 months ago and haven't regretted it for a second. I had a look loads of other bikes, including condor but the Surly ticked all the boxes, it really is versatile. if you want a strong bike that you can stick fat tyres on, then a steamroller will be hard to turn down. admittedly it isn't the cheapest OTP around, but the frame and forks are really well made and the full bike comes with pretty decent bits. the hubs are really good - I might well have chosen them to build wheels on anyway, the rims could be better but are strong, the cranks are alright - I plan on upgrading mine after a couple of years, the bb and headset are good quality. where was I going with this...can't remember. basically I love my surly and would certainly get one again.

also, if you're getting on the cyclescheme thing it's cheap anyway, so everyone's a winner!

Hey CasaSteve, the SE bikes look gross, so avoid them. That's all I have to say on the subject.

hi im looking to get an otp fixed gear, coming from a bmx backround i really dont have a clue about track frames, i was going to go for a charge plug freestyler but saw how badly they got slated on here and it gave me second thoughts on shelling out the 500 notes for one ..any suggestion on what to get would be great =D
i basically want something i can jump down a few stairs on wheelie about and not worry about breaking it, hence why i was going to opt for the plug freestyler

Okay, I've tried again. I've done a large partial update. I've made quite a few changes.

Added: Bianchi Via Condotti and Bianchi Via Brera, plus others.

Deleted: Iron Horse Transit, Montana Trk Al1, Pinnacle Bachelor, Swobo Sanchez, SE Lager 2009, Giant Bowery '84 2009, Trek T1, Vernon Barker Fixed, and sadly, the Specialized Tricross Single.

Though some of these may be available in certain places, there are not generally available, so have been removed from the list.

I think what people really want to know is..

What OTP bike can they get with minimal modification to the bike that can..
a) Do a few tricks on
b) Feel good to ride through traffic on
c) look like a flashy twat infront of there mates
d) and all round abuse knowsing there frame or forks wont snap

Can anybody help? as i two am looking for the same after building my own bike and snapping the frame as it was only some cheap spanish racer and i liked to think it was a Bmx a few things im looking at..

but it is not worth basing a bike purcahse on a gear ratio is it, a change of rear sprocket is not an expensive thing to do?

Some bikes in the list can be ordered now, but will not be on the shop floors for a a few weeks yet. Obviously, 2009 bikes will now be at bargain prices.

Stunningly, the Trek District, AND the Veloheld have both jumped £150!!! Blimey. There's money to be made in this game.

Giant have taken the opposite approach, by dropping £150 off the 2010 version of the Bowery 72.

We all know that theres hundereds of people out there that stumble across a few fixie videos on vimeo and ask daddy to buy them a bike. or are eating bagels down bricklane and see it as the latest trend to get into..

i agree you shouldnt buy a bike on its gear ratio but.. i already have chain rings and cogs of that ratio they sell on the otp and if im going to buy a complete i dont want to spend a extra 50 pound on top for a chainset and cog then maybe find out my cranks dont fit or need to buy extra chain links etc..

after reading alot of posts i would asume there is no great winner sitting around the £500 for a otp, as it just seems to be down to ownership of a bike or a personal taste for every good comment on a bike i read theres about 5 negative wich has left me with great confusion.

I am only suggesting chaining the cog, you wouldn't need to change the chainset but you have a point on extra links (if lowering the gearing) unless you find a smaller cheap chainring and could just change that instead.
Reason I pointed it out is that it is unlikely to have the 100% correct gearing for you so changing the gearing on an OTP is a bit of a given.
Unless people just ride what they get?

Nevermind. The point greaser_tony, is that if you're on here writing stuff, it means you can read also. There is a multitude of answers to the questions that you have posed. Use The SEARCH function (UTFS) please, because no-one here will have the time nor inclination to hold your hand, and answer what has already been answered.......or is most painfully obvious from the simplest of Google Searches.

If you won't make a bit of effort to find out the answers, apart from just asking outright, then initial good grace toward you, would vanish in short order.

Do yourself and others here a favour - ask questions that you cannot easily find the answer for.....then we will help.

kerley, many people actually stick with the gear ratios that come with an OTP. I suppose they are actually more likely to change the look, rather than the functioning of the bike.

Yes, its bar-spinnable......as are most of the SE Racing bikes. Certainly, all the Lagers are.
