  • Yeah, we're considering bigger stuff but Kate, my wife, is really put off by hot derivatives, whereas I am not going to part with a [when considering it as purely a sum of money] huge amount of cash for a boring car.

So a warm supermini is the best compromise for us. I also have a Combo van so space isn't an issue. If we're going a long way it is normally for a break away so we'll be in the bay window, so it's mostly for Kate to use for work and general day to day running about.

That makes three vehicles which precludes the high insurance and tax of a decent hot hatch. I agree with your points, there is a lot of fun to be had for the money we have to spend, but it just doesn't add up for our circumstances.

Having tried the Panda and thought about it over the weekend we're now definitely going to get the Lupo back to good as new condition. I took it out today, and despite not being able to extend the engine I had an absolute hoot. Gently nurse it to 60mph and stay put, whatever the radius of the corner. There's nothing comparable on the market today, it's a rare fairly desirable variant being the openair 100bhp jobbie so I think it's gonna be a lifer. Besides, I spent 3 hours T-Cutting and waxing it this afternoon and I'm not giving someone else the benefit of all that elbow grease.

  • Sounds like it just needs a damn good service and tune?? Maybe take it to an independent VW specialist, there are loads around just have a look at VW Performance mag next time you're in Tescos.

Another consideration - a mate has just got himself a Skoda Fabia (I believe based on the Polo) 1.9TDI. Had it chipped in an hour and it's now nigh on 200bhp. Even though it's the VXR or whatever they are called it's a bit much for the chassis - I suspect he'll be getting through front tyres. Hugely entertaining though and a great 'Q' car..

  • Just taken it to the local indie, a VW specialist we've used for years. Needs cambelt service, new pedal box and exhaust backbox. Should come to quite a bill, but it'll be worth it.

Hadn't considered the Skoda. Might look in to that one, but I would prefer a revvy petrol motor.

  • I know what you mean, revs are fun but there is something addictive about instant torque. My mate got the car for his wife now they've had a baby (needed 4 doors etc) and had it chipped for himself.. He finds himself leaving his Z3 at home most of the time and going in the labia.....great fun and still economical.

  • Even Mr McCarthy can't possibly defend this monstrosity...

Despite the questionable looks and the fact that they are no more practial than an elise They drive very well and are really good fun when setup properly for track work. I drove the first car tuned by Thorney Motorsport that was supposed to be 270bhp-ish with nitrons and stickier rubber and it was a quick little thing. Really cheap now too !

  • I've created a group for VW lovers.

goes off to put flamesuit on

    p.s. I have love for dubs !!

  • MikeC's nightmare. ;)

  • MikeC's dream. ;)

    Fixed.

    Bahahahaha!

    Repped!

  • Beautiful. There's a Porsche specialist under the arches in Druid St. Bermondsey. Walk past dozens of S1 911s and 356s every day. My favourite car bar none.

  • Anyone clock Universally Challenged last night? One round of questions all on Le Mans cars. Naturally I cleaned up. Doofus College or whoever they were didn't do bad but slipped up on a McLaren F1 of all things, albeit shot from a slightly unusual angle. A couple of rounds later was all on classic guitar solos from the 70's. Geeklord University failed massively. I only had one blip there, forgetting the name of Ritchie Blackmore(the shame). I could hardly answer anything else, as per, but it was the most entertaining episode since the days of Gail Trimble.

Bonnet is too slanted, I'd say E-Type or Daytona?

  • I'd go for Daytona too, doesn't really look like an E-Type.

  • Definitely Daytona spyder.
