  • Which descent is this, the one down from Biggin Hill? I was going to suggest an alternative route that has less traffic and less steep hills when I hooked up with everyone at CP in the morning.

I mean Hesiers Hill, leading to Beddlestead Lane. You can avoid it and the subsequent climb by going the long way round towards and on the B269.

  • Hesiers indeed. I'm a decent descender but found it difficult on fixed. Geared it's an absolute hoot though.

  • Just wondering if anyone going on this "superepic" ride happens to have a Canon G9/spare battery that they would be happy to lend me for the day? Got a little project up my sleeve and my batteries might not last. It's a NB-2LH battery.

  • Hesiers is a tricky one - it's tempting to let rip, as you can see the road ahead, but then you realise how much gravel there is at the bottom, and then you spot the sheep wandering onto the road...

I usually skip the left turn down Hesiers and go straight on to join the B269, even though drivers treat that stretch like a motorway.

It looks as though I'll be heading over to CSG for 8.45 tomorrow. As Oliver's not going to be there, I'll make up for his Pogliaghi's absence by riding my glittery red Pogliaghi there.

  • I'll hopefully see any of you I know there. I'll be leaving from mine about 9:30 for a spirited ride over.

  • I mean Hesiers Hill, leading to Beddlestead Lane. You can avoid it and the subsequent climb by going the long way round towards and on the B269.

That was my proposed route with less traffic. Thanks for the tip. Might be best to go the longer way round.

  • ok see you all tomorrow a couple of things, based on oliver's points..etc

    1. it is going to be 12-16 degrees and we will be standing around watching the race so bring stuff to be warm
    2. the route is easy doable fixed.
    3. a few of us know the area well. and there are some diversions on more major roads to miss hills at these points we will tell people (eg B269)
    4. i have baked biscuits :)
    1. don't forget your pennies for a cup of hot chocolate from the snack van in the car park.
  • need to pack my bags for an emergency house move so probably going to have to skip this one , but i've been excited about cheering claus and scarlett on for a few weeks now so might just fuck the packing

  • fuck the packing, do it when you get back...

  • Can I come? I should make it to Crystal Palace for 8.45. First forum ride for me. Will be on a Bianchi Veloce. And I have a spare NB-2LH battery for stelle if he/she still needs?

  • Of course you can nyoro. I'll be at CP, on a geared De Rosa so come and say hello when you get there.

  • Cool. Where abouts is the cafe meeting point? Not familiar with CP.

  • Thanks - see you there.

  • I'm just home and really quite shit-faced, no way am I gonna make it to the start. Kinda like the idea of tagging along behind, but even that feels a bit unrealistic.

    Have a good day....

  • See you at Smithfields

  • See you there folks, I'm going for a spin around north kent first.

  • Hesiers indeed. I'm a decent descender but found it difficult on fixed. Geared it's an absolute hoot though.

I was geared! I definitely had problems even then ...

That was my proposed route with less traffic. Thanks for the tip. Might be best to go the longer way round.

There'll be no need for you to avoid it, Andy--that remark was more for less experienced riders (of whom there'll be none on this ride, by the looks of it). For instance, on the Meridian ride we had one or two who definitely benefited from avoiding the drop and the subsequent climb.

  • It looks as though I'll be heading over to CSG for 8.45 tomorrow.

    Do you mean Crystal Palace?

As Oliver's not going to be there, I'll make up for his Pogliaghi's absence by riding my glittery red Pogliaghi there.

My Pogliaghi's in Germany. I don't have it over here.

  • Any results?

Pissed off to miss the ride, I was up in time but fucked around too much and left late, missed the smithfield meet then got to CP for 915, but obviously you had all left.

  • That's a shame Tom. You must've only missed us by 5 or 10 minutes at CP.

I'm not sure of the results but Illy, Andy, Pilky and Claus were representing the forum in fine style. I'm not sure who the fastest was of them, both Matts were close to the top ten I think. It was a good ride out and back, even if it was a bit damp.
