  • Stop trying to make everything sexual Ashley!

I can't help it. Its my belief that everything is either political or sexual.

I'm with Bill Clinton on that one though.

    Sorry. Again. :)

  • And with a spare set mine would last longer..

yes, but then you need 8
not 4 like the fenix :)

    best interwebz light argument ever...

  • hi bummpf, i have been waiting for you to get on this, i was trying to think what ones you had were, where is the best place to get them?

just found this 250 lumes at 18 quid

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Romisen-Q5-CREE-250-Lumens-3-Modes-LED-Pen-Torch-RC-N3B_W0QQitemZ280402958512QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportsLeisure_Camping_LightsLanternsTorches?hash=item41495198b0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

That's the model, but mine was the non-Q5 version, from dealextreme.

Even though the Q5's a bit brighter, I'd take those lumen claims with a pinch of salt.

Either way, it's a great helmet light, and good to have one on the bar supplementing the Hope (which will shut off without warning when the batteries die).

  • Don't know if someone has already shared the following link (it's in Finnish, but the pics should speak for themselves):
    http://www.kolumbus.fi/hietala2/jukka/teholed/teholed.htm

I believe that would be enough for the streets of London, too.

  • Unless the Fenices (?) were at least half price, I'll stick with my Romisen equivalents. ~£12 incl p&p, high (3hr @ approx 180lumen), low (10hr? @ approx 100lumen), strobe (superfluous), 2xAA, decent enough build quality.

Do they come with a bracket to attach them to the bars, or does it involve a roll of duck tape?

  • I use 2 short velcro straps to attach one to a helmet. For the bars, there's an origamiesque trick using a length of old inner tube, plus an elastic band to stabilise. If you search for 'origami' with the 'search this thread tool' on the TNRC thread, you'll find a video.

There's also the two fish lock block available, which many people use without incident.

  • For open, unlit roads there are some amazing small torches available for cheap. Alongside a Cateye Singleshot I've used 2 of these tiny CREE things for riding down gorges in pooring rain. Usually using 2 of these on 'normal' is way more light than needed for regular conditions.

    230 lumens for $17!

The same website sells the mounts needed to mount one on the handlebar. For fitting one to my helmet I use a mount designed for fitting torches to gun-sights, they sell that too.

You need one of these batteries to run one torch at the full 230 lumens for about 4 hours, or on 'normal' (about as bright as a Hope Vision 1) for about 8 hours. The charger's cheap too.

The torches themselves are tough but I've managed to get one of them to develop an occasional flicker after getting it soaked for 5 hours. I should have done something with the seals? KY jelly?

    :o

  • anyone ever tried this?

I suppose it's better than a row of blinking leds. And it's great for rave parties too

Read posts 121-123 in this thread. There's a solution there.

Erik, this was discussed in post 82 in this thread. Its not even that long a thread really.

  • I've just bought a fantom xr9, and although I'm very happy with the light itself [it's very very bright], the bracket is poo. I can't seem to find anywhere to mount it where it won't get in the way of my legs as I'm riding. Anyone got one of these with some ingenious installation technique to get it out of the way?

Yup, I posted about them on page 3. Pretty good. More visible than an LED light in situations where its not really dark but all the cars have their lights on anyway. Have yet to use one in the proper dark but I can't see how it wont be good.

  • how long does delivery from deal extreme take. I generally don't like using sites like these...especially if they start bringing stuff in from china but payment via paypal seems OK to me. would you use the free postage or pay the £8 for better? did you get taxed when they got to England. I'm looking at that full package of a light, batteries and charger and it comes to £21 with the free postage or £29 with better postage. Would these fit into the twofish straps OK?

  • Saw a couple of people mention on the thread that they have the niterider minewt mini-usb - this came out well in the group test of lights in cycling plus last month and I am planning on ordering one of these as an accessory alongside a new bike i am getting through a cycle to work scheme throught cyclesolutions/wheelies - but they have 2 types - the mini usb, and the mini usb plus, £90 and £120 respectively, but the only difference i can see is that there is a helmet mounting bracket for the light and powerpack on the plus version - can't see why this is worth an extra thirty quid - but helmet mounting might be good for being able to point light at cars coming from side for extra visibility.

so...those who got it, should i splash the extra for the plus model? Or do you know if it can be modded on the cheap to helmet mount?

The free delivery took about 2 weeks if I remember. No tax charge.

nice one...might have to get a UK seller cos it's getting too dark too quick!

  • managed to get a nice little 250 lumens cree light for cheap off ebay but it doesn't come with batteries. I thought it would be easy to get the 18650 batteries it requires but they are bloody expensive! I would like to get 2 or 4 of them and a charger. does anyone know where is good to buy them that isn't hong kong!? I have just read something interesting which seems to make sense as the batteries are used in loads of different electrical appliances:

    http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15638382

what do people make of this?

  • can anyone here help with sourcing 18650 batteries please?

I should point out I took scarlett's advice on these torches and bought two to supplement my Hope. As it was such overkill I've given one of the Romisens to Hillbilly.

To sort out the bar mounting I drilled an extra hole in a mini pump bracket (Designed to fit next to the bottle cage) and cable tied it to the hope light.

    Google is your friend.

nice one but I should have specified cheap ones. That place would set me back about £25 for 2 batteries and a charger! I have managed to find a UK supplier that does them for cheap and seems to be a nice bloke. sporting-kent on ebay:

    http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/sporting-kent/

He won't have them in for a week or so but he is doing a charger and 2 batteries for £9.99 and £2.99 postage. I presume they won't be the absolute best quality but a good starting point with the charger. You can also pick yourself up some riffle mounts that would enable you to mount a torch in line with a bar as opposed to perpendicular like the twofish blocks:

  • Hah... Mr Ken there just orders them from DealExtreme probably!

    :D

  • Awesome new back light due to be stocked shortly by chain reaction (by Exposure)

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=371&ModelID=42213

Battery powered with some serious looking power output :)

  • I've just noticed that the Blackburn Mars 3 rear light is only £15 at chainreaction:

It's a damn good light for that price, and doesnt eat batteries too fast either.
    Bright and waterproof, awesome.
Need small screwdriver to get to batteries, not so awesome. Still a good light though.
