How your gloves will cope should you ever do a hippy and end up in a canal?
i think you ride in pretty benign winter conditions, or for not very long periods of time. Which is totally ok. I'm not trying to act tough. I just know where the weaknesses lie in my situation. and so i address them. wet hands are cold hands. cold hands are miserable hands. miserable hands means i don't ride. Same with feet.
I deal with snow every day from november until march. literally every single day. The sky closes over us like the lid to a white box and doesn't open until april. We don't see sun. and it's COLD. not cold like -5C... cold like -25C. Add to that all the salt they drop on the roads and it's actually wet. Wet and way below freezing.
The reason we have this weather is that we are on a very big lake (Lake Erie) and we lie underneath the jet stream which dumps arctic air us. The jet stream goes over the lake and picks up moisture. The second it hits the land, the moisture falls out of the sky as snow. We call this the "snow belt".

we also get legitimate storms. thats all i got to say. It's cold man. If my gloves didn't keep the water out, i'd be sending them back.

I get cold hands too, Leon. You tried inner gloves? Or surgical/latex gloves can be a cheap and cheerful way to keep heat in, if you have real circulation problems.

• #237
Keep your wrists (and core warm).
The best glove in the world can give you numb fingers if it's the slightest bit too tight.

• #238
oh man, to be honest, and you can tell me to htfu, but I wouldn't ride in -25º! shit! hahaha
-
• #239
If people are getting cold hands in early Oct - circulation could be an issue - aside from the obvious htfu, eat more ginger....
I cycle in the buff, wearing lightweight summer gloves chomping on as much ginger as will fit in my face

Yes..i have tried inner gloves.....still had very cold hands..and thats in early October come December its agony [sounds a bit dramatic but true]....might get the SealSkinz liner gloves in Merino.....but will give the latex gloves a go.....sounds too simple...so will give them a go......cheers

товарищ if the sealskinz are as good as the socks, they will be very good
as for the mog.... he's ex-battersea, named (by Battersea)... Mr Redman

Decathlon do a good glove liner if you are ever around that area, although I don't think they are in stock yet.

+1 for the Pearl Izumi lobster Mitts . I got a pair 15 years ago and they did the job in some extremely cold London winter days but I've probably only worn them twice in the last 5 years ...

Dachstein mitts - it's what the Sheep would wear, if they weren't.....you know........covered in wool

FACTS
BIG waterproof gloves equal warm hands. surgical gloves ain't gonna do shit. try the specialized radiators in large or medium. they have a measurement guide on their site. Get a size towards the large end of where you fall.
Another great idea are convertible mittens. When i ski, I ONLY use mittens because it's just too damn cold otherwise. There are several companies that make a glove inside a mitten. There's a zipper on the side of the mitten that allows that lightly gloved hand to poke out so you can work with your hands. Finish whatever you're doing, zip them back up, and you're good to go. Depending on if you ride with brakes or gears or whatever, this may be good for you. They WILL keep you warm.
The best gloves on the planet are Hestra, but be prepared to pay.
A BIG cheap glove will keep you warmer than a small expensive glove. Buy big.
